6 / 10 - Evolve
Feb 11, 2015

Evolve convolutes its simple idea with too many mechanics, dulling what should have been a great experience.

Hardline doesn't sufficiently evolve interesting mechanics in the terrible single-player and is only saved by an at times enjoyable multiplayer component.

A superb, intelligent evolution of the series.

A worthy technical upgrade, but changes to enemy spawn locations serve to add frustration and highlight issues with the original release.

A streamlined menu system, with quests now receiving a dedicated tab coupled with the ability to track bounties and quests via the Ghost's UI, better storytelling with engaging characters and a more consistent drip-feed of genuine rewards for the player means Destiny 2.0 feels like the opportunity taken that Year One badly missed. While there are still many things Bungie can do to improve things, there's now a sense of optimism for players, as this content proves that the developer is listening.

7 / 10 - FIFA 16

FIFA 16 is an incremental improvement, but with legacy issues still plaguing the on-field action the changes feel hollow in light of PES 2016's overwhelming turnaround.

EA should be commended for taking two-years to provide a much-improved sequel. UFC 2 presents a huge step up over its predecessor, with more modes, more fighters, better in-cage action and incredible visuals. While I can’t speak for the online modes yet, as things stand, UFC 2 deserves a spot on every fight fan’s shelf.

Horrendous dialogue, overly simplistic controls and mechanics make for a terrible adventure for Brog and his Barbarians. Although it’s admirable to make a simplistic RTS, doing so completely strips any ability for the player to overcome the unfair odds that the game presents as soon as the tutorials come to an abrupt end.

I Am Setsuna starts out on a strong footing: offering what seems to be the perfect game for every JRPG fan with too little time on their hands. However, something is lost along the way, too much is trimmed and outside of the excellent combat system, the plot and characters simply fail to maintain my attention, some struggle to remain likeable because of their incredibly annoying dialogue.

In typical Telltale fashion, you’re delivered a fiendishly teasing twist at the end that already has me speculating about where the series can go in episode two. But the good thing is that this will not be a series where the crook just gets away at the last second. Rather than be a series where Batman always feels a step behind an ever-elusive bad guy, Telltale has instead opted to have new and intriguing foes to take on with each episode. A consistent political undercurrent tied to Bruce’s backstory, and how his parents weren’t all they seemed, adds further intrigue to the plot that I can’t wait to explore in episode two.

No Man’s Sky is a good game. Sean Murray and Hello Games’ vision of creating a vast universe on a scale unseen in video games has no doubt been achieved, and will certainly provide everyone who plays it with something unique.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided could – and should – have been amazing. All the ingredients were there: an intriguing premise, engaging and mature narrative themes, solid gameplay foundations and a beautiful look. However, the rushed plot, nonsensical conclusion, under-developed characters and continued shortcomings in combat mean this is a title which fails to live up to its potential.

Once you get out on the pitch, this is the best game of football ever made. It’s the most technically savvy, intelligent and free-flowing experience I’ve ever had on a digital pitch. I just hope that the online experience – an enormous flaw last year – holds up so that this experience can be excellent across the board.
