A powerhouse of emotional storytelling. Developers Giant Sparrow have taken their previous work on The Unfinished Swan and have improved upon it in every way, creating something truly soul-stirring and evocative with Edith Finch.
MechRunner offers little more enjoyment or innovation than the thousand of mobile runner games on the market – except it cost at least 10 times more. Sure, it's reasonably pretty, shiny and it does have a catchy soundtrack but the gameplay leaves a lot to be desired. MechRunner is just not fun and a huge disappointment.
When the game is working as it should, the slick gunplay, simple premise, abrasive sense of humour and clean art style make it an enjoyable playlist co-op game for when you're having some friends over for pizza and gaming. It's a shame that the journey from PC to PS4 has been so rough and that Tango Fiesta is so filled bugs and glitches that I find this version hard to recommend to anyone. Do yourself a favour and go for a Tango Siesta instead (or get the game on PC).
Victor Vran is one of the most enjoyable aRPG's I've played in recent times with some A+ additional content for Metal heads thrown in for good measure.
Gazillion have created a massive, content filled free-to-play Marvel MMO that can become repetitive if played alone and unbalanced if played on an overpopulated hub or when using XP boosts. Still, the game is great fun with friends when playing through the non-hub areas that's let down by some visual slowdown when the screen gets congested and some uninspired storytelling techniques.
I found Operation Babel to be a convoluted, overly-complex and uninspiring slog through repetitive dungeons with only a handful of enjoyable moments.
WipEout Omega Collection is a turbo boost down memory lane for long time fans in which we get to play 3 of the best games in the series in their best possible light.
Perception is a narrative horror that tries something a little different and for the majority of the game, it works to great effect. The darkness and sound design as well as some interesting level designs fill the game with enough low level tension to give you a crick in the neck. The visuals aren't always the prettiest, the game strays into the mundane a few too many times and the plot has forgettable moments but the unique premise and fright-inducing chases make Perception a better-than-average title.
The Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy is a fantastic re-introduction to PlayStation's forgotten mascot.
Serial Cleaner is a tense, challenging stealth game that'll equally frustrate as much as it entertains.
If you're looking for a perplexing puzzle game that'll fill a bus journey with some head scratching enigmas, Ninja Usagimaru: Two Tails of Adventure might be the game for you – but approach with caution
Unbox: Newbie's Adventure combines the new hotness with old school classics to come up with something unique. Sure, the unpredictable movement takes some getting used to, the combat is a little lacklustre in single player and the vehicle control is awkward but it does far more right than it does wrong.
Mr Shifty is an intense and gratifying experience that has its tongue pressed firmly into its cheek. It's not quite on the same level as some of its contemporaries but it makes the most of what makes it unique and introduces new ideas from the ground floor to the penthouse. The occasional section of trial-and-error and the mountain-esque difficulty spike towards might be enough to make some players rage quit, but if you can push through the frustrations, there's a funny, exhilarating game to be found underneath.
487. That's the number of times I died in my first playthrough of Deadcore. It has been years since I've wrestled with a game as much as I have here. My hands were sweaty, my head was bobbing up and down as I moved on screen and I regularly shouted profanity at the TV when I died cheaply. Deadcore is a test of your reflexes, memory, persistence, observation, determination and patience and, if you like to be pushed to your limits, you might just like it.
Neon Drive is one of the best music rhythm games on the PS4 because it does the unexpected.
The Girl and The Robot have made their way to the PS4 and it's a promising start for a fledgling developer
LawBreakers is an expertly crafted and deep hero shooter that's an original alternative to the existing crop.
The Enigma is an explosive start to Telltale's Batman: The Enemy Within. Apart from a handful of unusual character interactions that didn't feel like genuine reactions to the situation and some emotional moments that fail to land, this episode is action packed and once again boasts a tonne of originality.
NeoCore's aRPG The Amazing Adventures of Van Helsing II has finally arrived on the PS4 and it's an enjoyable adventure but lacks polish and becomes a tad repetitive
Observer is a suave, confident cyber-punk adventure that starts strongly then loses its way before the credits roll
