Whether you are a long time fan of the Layton games, or a series beginner, like myself, the Deluxe Edition of Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy is bursting at the brim with a plethora of content. The story is fun, the characters are charming and upbeat, the puzzles really get you questioning your IQ, and the experience is an overall enjoyable one.

Liked-a-lot - Lumini
Feb 3, 2020

Lumini is a beautiful game. Your story begins as that of a simple desire to survive to uncovering the tragedy of this alien world. It combines environmental storytelling that you see in games like Journey, but also the struggle of surviving not just for yourself, but for your Lumini family; a kind of gameplay that induced both stress and pleasure, similar to Shelter. You play this game alone, but it never truly feels that way. It does not take long to care deeply for the fragile fairies that traverse this frightening world of danger and death, but by doing so you learn what it means to survive and to live in this world.

When I first saw ads of Ciel Fledge, I didn’t think much of its story. Instead, I was too focused on the game’s very interesting premise of raising a daughter. What I didn’t realize was that this game has a beautifully fleshed out story that really grounds your and Ciel’s relationship in this dystopian world full of mysteries.

Despite its comparative lack of character development and its sometimes oversimplification of gameplay, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Rescue Team DX is a charming and wonderful remake of the first title in the series. I think Nintendo was smart to go with this fairly simplistic version of the game as a way to bring in new mystery dungeon players. My hope is that this game was an experiment to test the waters of people’s interest. I believe a new mystery dungeon including gens 7 and 8 may be in the works. And if not, well, at least we know Nintendo hasn’t completely forgotten about this best-selling spin off franchise.

This game is too stinkin’ short! After playing one level I told myself I would try out the next but quit after a while. I beat the game in a single one and half hour sitting. The game is so beautifully made and is really quite cheap, but it’s a game that lasts no more than a couple hours. There is a good side to this though! Once I beat the last battle, the villain mentioned that Kebako will have six more trials to face. This, I assume, means there will be updates to the game that add in more levels.

Liked-a-lot - Cooking Simulator

Cooking Simulator is a really fun game that I can definitely see players getting a lot of laughs out of. I know I certainly did. The road to getting great reviews from critics is a lot more complicated than it seems, as food must be served on time as well as be tasty, of course! I found this to be way easier said than done! If you’re looking for a game that will test your skills, give you a good laugh, or have you immersed in the chaotic culinary world, then Cooking Simulator might just be the game for you!

Liked-a-lot - Nexomon: Extinction
Aug 28, 2020

This game is far from just another Pokémon rip-off. Nexomon: Extinction improves on all the places that fans have been asking for. It’s a beautiful game with a dark yet humorous story. It also isn’t afraid to challenge players and seriously twist their conceptions of these types of games. If you’re craving a monster catching game or even just an RPG with a good story, then you cannot pass up the chance to play Nexomon: Extinction.

Melbits World isn’t a game that is trying to do anything groundbreaking in its genre. It’s a short puzzle platformer that just wants you to have fun. Admire the little Melbits, laugh a little as you accidently push a Melbit off a cliff, and gain some slight satisfaction from growing your collection of cute creatures. I think this fairly short and simple game is great for families, young kids, and those that just want something to smile at.

I’ve played a couple visual novels on the Switch that were both far more expensive and far less fun than Ascendant Hearts. This visual novel plays with anime tropes with an abundant of humor and, most importantly, has a story that actually had me engaged from the get-go. There is quite a bit of fan service in the game, which is surprising when you consider the age rating. If you’re a fan of visual novels, then I would definitely recommend checking this one out.

Have you ever wanted to be like your favorite superhero Captain Underpants? Okay…maybe he’s not your favorite superhero (he was definitely mine as a kid), but I’d say he’s definitely on par with all the Marvel and DC heroes out there. Anyway, if you’ve ever coveted underwear related superpowers or even if you’re just someone who gets a good laugh out of butt jokes, then, my friend, this may be the perfect game for you. Brief Battles is a multiplayer party game that has you assume the role of a pink sausage like thing(?) and don some magic underwear that will have you soaring, clawing, and shooting snot at your frenemies.

Soul Searchers offers a variety of other features to dabble with. You could play the main story alone, like I did, or you could play with up to three other players. This can be both fun and challenging as there will suddenly be more mouths to feed upon the tiny boat. But I could also imagine it being a lot of fun as someone could be a navigator dedicated to keeping an eye on the map and binoculars whilst someone else could be focused on catching fish and keeping food supplies up. This multiplayer mode isn’t just locked to the story, as there is a random mode that creates randomized islands for you to reach. I think this is a fun mode for those just interested in the survival mechanic of the game. Lastly, there is also a feature where you can play through some “artistic” short stories. They’re pretty experimental, and I wasn’t a total fan, but its worth checking out nonetheless.

Mixed - Save Koch
Mar 10, 2020

This game is chock-full of lore and requires multiple playthroughs to really understand the basic mechanics and eventually how to be strategic. Each choice you make is vital, as it affects a potential ending or acquirement of a new agent. I did think this game to be well-crafted, but I had to wonder if the developers realized that the sheer amount of information in the game, though appealing to some, is daunting and impassible to others. With that being said, Save Koch is not a bad game. Rather, it’s just not an accessible game.

Mixed - Infini
Jul 31, 2020

What I found frustrating, however, was that sometimes the garishness of the background in the puzzles would be too strong and it would actually be quite difficult to differentiate the puzzle itself from the images in the back. Despite my criticisms, I don’t think Infini is necessarily a bad game. I think it’s a game that is trying to tell a story in a very non-linear or traditional way. I just can’t say that this was done effectively. However, I do think the puzzle mechanics are quite interesting and sometimes even refreshing. This is definitely a game you would play for its puzzles rather than any story its attempting to tell. With that said though, it feels to me like either a hit or miss. Personally, it was a miss.
