Death's Door is a definitive Game of the Year candidate. The story is engrossing, the action is tense and fun, and the game is filled with memorable bosses and characters. I couldn't stop smiling while playing, even at times when I kept dying to challenging enemies. The game can be a bit short if you play straight through, but you will be rewarded if you take the time to explore. Death's Door is a must-buy, and I can't recommend it enough.

Soul-reaping doesn't seem to be a tedious job, but Death's Door shines a light upon the fictitious scenario in which the afterlife is bureaucratized. In a world where death came to a halt, an unlikely eulogy holds little to no meaning. Living forever has become the norm, a fever dream come true.

Death’s Door is one of those rare games that grab your attention straight away and keeps it for the length of its journey. At its core, Death’s Door is both a Zelda and a Soulsboune clone. However, the two-man team over at Acidnerve have crafted something that’s both an excellent mix of genres, whilst also remaining original. Death’s Door understands what makes these two genres great and rather than imitation, it refines and expands on these points.

Death’s Door is easily one of the best and well-rounded action games that I’ve played this year. It gets all the basics right and then excels with a compelling story and cast of characters, a gorgeous and interesting world to explore, and combat that is intense and extremely enjoyable. It’s an absolute must and has left me now never quite looking at a crow in the same way, always wondering whether it’s about to attack and reap my soul!

Death’s Door has some fun lore and a fantastic main character; I mean, I love birds, and what’s not to love about a little bird with a sword? The combat is tight, and battles with enemies and bosses never feel unfair. If anything, each failure felt like it was my fault, something I could fix in a future run or my playstyle overall. Everything comes together so well in Death’s Door; it’s just so enjoyable to play. It has become a top ten contender for my games of the year list so far.

While Death's Door borrows a lot of elements from many other games, it mashes them all together and refines them into its own thing. Not one single element feels undercooked and the result is a mysterious world you'll instantly be lost within. Outside of the odd frame dip in certain situations, we absolutely loved Death's Door. It's a game filled with surprises, nods, humour, and moves at such a pace we could barely put the controller down. Games this well-crafted don't come along very often, but when they do, they're something to celebrate. Death's Door deserves all the attention it will most likely get, and is a contender for one of 2021's best games.

Death’s Door was a title I was looking forward to from the previews. I liked the concept, the gameplay looked good, and the characters looked silly and fun. However, I did not expect it to be one of the best games I’ve played this year. Beating the main boss and rolling the credits isn’t even the end. Even with its grueling final boss fight, I absolutely adored every second of Death’s Door. The world developer Acid Nerve has created still feels rife with secrets I’m still yet to uncover after 10 hours with the game. Outside of a minor technical blip and a significant difficulty spike towards the end, Death’s Door is simply sensational. It doesn't skimp on challenging action or a satisfying story, but it also doesn't expect us to devote dozens of hours to it. Death's Door focuses on a few ideas to create an exceptional, well-balanced experience. The crow's adventure features lots of intense, precision-driven combat, and it's very rewarding to master the fighting mechanics to defeat the enemies. In addition, its elaborate world invites us to explore every corner with countless secrets and enigmas. The difficulty is constant, however the agility of the pace reduces the frustration of defeat. It is also notable the care in the construction of its dark fantasy universe, which approaches the theme of death with humour, softness and charismatic characters. Not only that, the ambiance is complemented with a beautiful look and remarkable soundtrack. The low complexity of some systems and the absence of unique ideas can be a nuisance, but flawless execution overrides these details. Furthermore, Death's Door is an immersive and unique adventure.

If Death’s Door is not mentioned in a list of the year’s best indies, it will only be due to its finer focus and lack of complexity or significant depth, which also speaks to the game's utter lack of bloat. Those who are looking for the cavernous biomes of Hollow Knight or the lore-rich epistolatory storytelling in a Souls game may feel shorted by the 10 or so breezy hours on offer here, but Death’s Door is a precisely engineered and immersive adventure which will fully satisfy anyone seeking that exact experience. Isometric action RPGs are a dime a dozen, but rarely are they polished to such a brilliant sheen.

Deaths' Door is a real gem: great visuals and art style, a satisfying combat system and an ironic story make it a game to not be missed.

Death's Door uses the classic Zelda template to a great extent, but it doesn't really offer anything new. But what is there is precisely crafted.

Death’s Door breathes some life into the generalized umbrella of action-adventure titles thanks to its efficient level design coupled with simple to grasp yet enjoyable mechanics. While a few factors, such as the ranged skill usage bar, are questionable in execution, the game’s flow and pace are never significantly hindered from ruining the experience as a whole. Furthermore, the dreary thematic tones exuded by the loneliness of the varied explorable sections alongside the appealing characterizations and dialogue also serve to make Death’s Door an assuredly exceptional time for those feeling even remotely curious.

Death's Door is a delightful isometric action adventure, graced by an inspired art direction and tight controls. Another indie gem from the masters at Devolver Digital.

Overall, Death's Door is a success. It's a short but entertaining and combat-heavy Zelda-like action-adventure that is only limited by scope. It might not have the most memorable puzzles or dungeons, but it has enough heart and skill to make up for its few, minor missteps.

A thoroughly entertaining mix of Dark Souls and Zelda that has few genuinely new ideas but still manages to enthral with a unique charm of its own.

Death's Door is one of the indie surprises of the year. Very well designed, melancholic and challenging, without being difficult. It knows how to transfer the essence of games like Dark Souls and Zelda in a delicious isometric perspective, with well-designed puzzles and a very well measured combat. Acid Nerve has done its homework.

All in all, Acid Nerve did a great job with Death’s Door and by pushing just a little bit more while taking a few calculated risks, they would have an outstanding game rather than a very good one. Still more than worth playing if you’re a fan of the genre and aren’t looking for something revolutionary. There is also some post-game content that should add some additional run time to your enjoyment.

Death's Door have a great look, great sound, and a great story about sweet embrace of death, which all culminates into one cozy adventure. Digital Devolver comes back with another gem on their hands, and we can't wait to see what Acid Nerve can make next.

Death's Door is a nervous action game that transcends Acid Nerve's old formula. Thanks to a clever difficulty, fights with brandnew situations, a rewarding exploration and a beautiful soundtrack, Death's Door is the perfect well-balanced experience of this summer, despite a very light pathfinding.

Happily, Death’s Door, the new action adventure game about a hard-working, soul-reaping crow is very much a love letter to the old Zelda games. Its mechanics are satisfying in a chip-off-the-old block way, its visuals are a delight and its story line is touched with assured, easygoing humor.

Ultimately it’s the boss fights you’ll remember by the time the credits roll on Death’s Door. There’s more of them than you’ll probably expect, and each and every one of them is wonderfully designed. They can be tricky to defeat – one or two of them particularly so – but when you emerge victorious the feeling is akin to overcoming a boss in Dark Souls. Needless to say, if you love games like The Legend of Zelda and don’t mind a bit more of a challenge, be sure to give Death’s Door your attention.

An inventive isometric slasher, Death’s Door feels like all the best bits of Souls-like structure and none of the bad. Its Zelda-inspired combat and systems are firmly at the challenging end of the spectrum, but are also pretty addictive, and mix well with a bleak yet unique story.

So overall, Death's Door offers up a hefty challenge in a top down action adventure through an interesting world. Will it be too hard for some? Maybe, but, with plenty of ways to upgrade your character, tools and magics, there's a way to stem the difficulty but you'll have to go a bit out of the way of the general adventure for that one.

As a game reviewer, I assumed I was bad at games so how on earth did I find Death's Door to be an unchallenging and somewhat unsatisfying experience? Whatever the reason, it's still a good game and I enjoyed mercilessly slaughtering its unique bosses.
