Critic Reviews for The Edge of Allegoria
The Edge of Allegoria is a grown up Pokemon game, for better or for worse. I enjoyed my time with it, but I think the fact it was so obviously Pokemon helped that a lot. A worthwhile experiment, and good for a larf, but not a game changer. It may be the first game ever to reference the 'why do they call it oven when you of in the cold food of out hot eat the food' meme though, and that's got to be worth something.
The Edge of Allegoria is a decent RPG that stands out for its retro Game Boy visual style. The combat is decent enough, and while the crudeness can get a bit much, it works well in the setting. Some frustrating dungeon designs and waypointing issues, plus a story that isn't too memorable do hold it back, though.
A dumb fun Retro RPG with smart mechanics and a sense of humour as salty as South Park.
An RPG where I love the game, hate the story. Never thought it possible, but here we are.
Be prepared to laugh, die a ton, and spend a couple of minutes here and there petting the good dog that stays by your side throughout its 20-hour story. Just remember, though: this game is not meant for kids.
If you are interested in playing a game that sends players back to the nostalgic age of Game Boy gaming but also adds enough adult humour to take the experience past the realm of mere childhood nostalgia, I'd suggest The Edge of Allegoria. Leave your sensibilities at the door, grab a snack (you'll find lots on your gaming journey), and prepare for a unique nostalgia trip.
With The Edge of Allegoria, we get a fu@#%%ng good game that more than convinced us with its crude humour and lovingly designed world. This game is definitely a highlight at the end of the year and brings a good dose of warmth and a lot of laughs, especially in the cold days with its often obscene jokes and bizarre ideas. The game scores with its creative approaches, be it in the dialogue, the world design or the combat system. However, you should be aware that the humour is not for everyone. Those who like crude, provocative humour will find a real goldmine here.
