Lay of the Land Reviews
Lay of the Land isn’t a long game; in fact, it took me about 18 hours to fully explore the map and defeat all bosses, but it’s nonetheless a solid open-world survival, with some caveats, that manages to stand out from a very thick crowd. In some aspects, it’s as generic as they come, but in many others, it’s very much unique and surprising. If you like titles like Minecraft and Terraria, and have a knack for customizing every little bit of your home base or building monumental masterpieces, this is definitely a solid pick.
Lay of the Land is a decent game at its core, with almost all the basic sandbox game mechanics ready in one package—sprawling land, intricate building mechanics, decent crafting gameplay, and basic combat—but ultimately, it feels like an Early Access title that hasn’t had enough time to cook in the oven yet. It’s got a solid foundation of its basic gameplay mechanics, but it could definitely benefit from a lot more improvements in the long run.
Lay of the Land stands out in the voxel-craft genre with the use of actual voxels, allowing for far more creative builds and stunning environments than anything else in the genre. While the experience is pretty short, players are sure to appreciate what’s in that six- to ten-hour timeframe, even if they might not be very compelled to play for longer.
