Nitro City Racing isn’t without its merits. There’s a straightforward arcade driving game here, and its emphasis on dodging traffic and completing bite-sized challenges can provide a little entertainment in the early stages. Unfortunately, the novelty wears thin, and the game doesn’t introduce enough variety to keep the experience fresh. The repetitive missions are made worse by traffic that can feel unfair, while the progression system occasionally turns playing the game into a chore. Rather than encouraging you to return for another thrilling run, it too often leaves you repeating the same activities in pursuit of the next upgrade. For an inexpensive Xbox release, simplicity isn’t necessarily a problem. The trouble is that Nitro City Racing mistakes having a simple idea for having enough content to support it. With more varied objectives, better-balanced progression and a fairer approach to traffic, this could have been a much more enjoyable little arcade diversion. As it stands, there are fleeting moments of fun, but they’re buried beneath repetition and frustration. Nitro City Racing has the foundations of an entertaining budget driving game, but it never quite gets into gear.
