Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered looks much better, with detailed kaiju, recognizable locations and stable performance. However, its animations, destruction and overall variety still feel rooted in 2002, making it more effective as updated nostalgia than a truly ambitious comeback.

Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered is an exceptionally competent remaster that successfully brings a title once lost to older consoles into the modern era. With attractive visuals, quality-of-life improvements to character unlocks, and solid combat carried over from the original, this is both a great Godzilla game and a highly entertaining fighting game—one that masterfully captures the sensation of controlling a Kaiju in the middle of a city.

If rental services still existed as they did in 2002, I’d say this is the perfect title to play over a weekend and never touch again. But since it has a $30-$40 price tag (depending on the platform), I can’t ultimately recommend Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered to anyone but the most hardcore Toho fans who’d make it their go-to party game. Like smashing action figures together as a kid, the fun in Destroy All Monsters is real but short-lived. The novelty wears thin really fast, and you’ll probably want to move on to something with a little more depth.
