Staffer Retro: A Supernatural Mystery Quest is a worthy follow-up to Staffer Case that expands and enriches the Staffer universe. Though it focuses more on narrative than puzzles and has somewhat different strengths and weaknesses than its predecessor, Staffer Retro maintains the series’ main thematic thrust and has me excited to see where the story will go next.

Staffer Retro is the kind of game that is sure to leave an impression once the truth is finally revealed. Compared with its predecessor, it feels more mature, more polished, and more story-driven. Its pacing is also remarkably smooth, making it easy to play through in a single sitting. However, with its deduction elements taking a back seat, its case design and overall playability may represent a slight step backward from the previous game.

Recommended if you’ve played the previous work. Although the newly introduced adventure and the existing detective elements were lacking, the direction, screenplay, storytelling, depth of the world-building, and overall cohesion were all refined. It’s a shame as a deduction game, but from the perspective of a visual novel based on a superpower world, it’s an excellent work.
