Combolands has a solid foundation, turning an unusual idea into an engaging experience at its best, with an intuitive mix of building, positioning, strategy, and combos that still rewards players who take the time to master its deeper interactions. The variety of guilds, items, builds, progression, and difficulty levels provides plenty of reasons to keep playing, while the satisfying evolution from an almost empty island into a small machine of chained effects is particularly compelling. However, slow structure unlocks, limited map variety, and some unclear mechanics keep the game from reaching the full potential of its premise. Even so, I enjoyed Combolands considerably, and with more polish and variety, it could turn a very good idea into something truly impressive.

Combolands is the best in the Balatro-like subgenre thus far since it understands the need for build diversity and variance between runs. It does this by ingratiating the Guild system into the core gameplay itself, making it a hopelessly addicting game to play.
