Critic Reviews for Pillars Of Eternity II: Deadfire - Beast Of Winter

Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire "Beast of Winter" gives fans more of a good thing, and presents a handful of interesting ideas and story beats. That said, anybody expecting this Pillars of Eternity II expansion to be anywhere near as vast, vibrant, and varied as the core game are likely to be left cold.

Beast of Winter is a strong self-contained story that expands on some of the background lore of the series, but just feels all too short and limited.

What Beast of Winter lacks in content it makes up for in depth with an intriguing plunge into the history of Eora.

Beast of Winter is a nice addition to already amazing Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire. It will keep you hooked, even through some annoyances for those 5-6 hours, to explore everything and learn about stories told. However, ultimately it feels rushed and a missed opportunity to do something much bigger and impactful with the Harbingers and Vatnir, who are the biggest positives of the DLC.After finishing Beast of Winter and resuming your Deadfire adventure, only Vatnir and his occasional monologue will remind you of the DLC, while everything else will feel like a distant memory...

Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire's first DLC is mainly focused on dungeon crawling, rather than the things that made the core game so awesome, and yet Beast of Winter is far from a boring addition, especially for those who see themselves as scholars of Eora's lore.

Beast of Winter is an absolutely fine piece of DLC. It made me chuckle a few times, I really enjoyed the major battles and the game looks as stunning as ever. Most importantly, I was gripped from beginning to end. I was just very surprised by how sudden and abruptly it all ended and how little my characters got to benefit from the new items. While the stakes are higher than normal, Beast of Winter just felt like a slightly longer quest that had been added to my journal rather than a new expansion. It was very nice to revisit Deadfire for an afternoon, it’s just a shame that there wasn’t much to digest at the end of it.

And so it was in the middle of one of the hottest summers to record, that the Old Man felt a chill down his back. It gripped him, cracked his skin, and caused him to slump over his post for hours. His hands were shaking, his eyes bleary, he knew that the Beast of Winter had come for him. And he knew not how this would end.
