SEGA AGES Phantasy Star - REVIEW (Nintendo Switch) video thumbnail

Phantasy Star is the best release so far from the Sega Ages series. It shows off innovation, outside the box thinking, and, after all these years, it is still a blast to play. It's one for the ages, folks.

Phantasy Star is an RPG classic and having it available on the Nintendo Switch is certainly great news. The quality of life improvements made available in this version as part of the SEGA AGES range make it easier for those new to the franchise to get their feet wet with a rebalanced game that now also features an in-game map for each of the many dungeons you'll visit that will auto-fill as with each step you take, making it an easier sell for those that didn't get a chance to experience it back in the day. I loved playing the game at home and on the go, and I very much look forward to Sega hopefully releasing the rest of the Phantasy Star RPGs on Nintendo Switch under the SEGA AGES series.

The Sega Ages version of Phantasy Star continues to prove that the Ages polish to old classics works wonderfully and should be emulated by other developers. The parts that made Phantasy Star feel archaic are gone, and while it still shows its age this version of the title is the strongest you'll come across anywhere.

As someone who loves retro RPGs yet has never played Phantasy Star before, I'm amazed at how great of a game it is.

GREAT - Phantasy Star comes to the Switch and it’s loaded with all sorts of options that should please hardcore fans. If you’re new to the game it’s still approachable even today, although having an appreciation for ‘80s 8-bit games will definitely impact your feelings toward it. I’m happy to finally say I’ve played this classic and the Switch’s portable mode is a great way to experience it!
