The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has expressed deep concerns over the Trump administration's recent tariffs on imported goods from China, Canada, and Mexico.
A 25% tariff on imports from Canada and 10% for China takes effect February 4, 2025, and ESA believes they present a potential adverse impact on the gaming industry and gamers alike. According to the government, the latest measures are part of its strategy to curb unfair trade, drug trafficking, and illegal migration.
For the US Video Game Industry Association, the tariffs could adversely impact hundreds of millions of citizens, harming the industry and eventually, the revenue it injects to the economy.
Potential Consequences for Gamers
Most gaming consoles and accessories are primarily manufactured in China, so the Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S may see a price spike due to these tariffs. The 25% duty could also impact game discs whose significant physical production is based in Mexico.
Tariffs on Mexican imports have since been suspended for at least a month following agreements between the authorities. However, those on Canadian and Chinese goods remain in effect, and surely the two countries are rolling out their countermeasures.
