FromSoftware and Hidetaka Miyazaki love poisonous swamps. I don't know why there's one in almost every game by the studio; it's almost as if they can't help themselves. Darks Souls, Elden Ring, and even its Shadow of the Erdtree DLC all feature swamps of one kind or another that drain your health. Fans were even worried that Armoured Core 6 would feature one.
Thankfully, Elden Ring Nightreign didn't feature any, giving you and your pals some respite from swamps, but it looks like that's about to come to an end. Even the developers are aware that it has become a meme, but that hasn't stopped them from adding a swamp to Nightreign's The Forsaken Hollows DLC.
In a conversation with GameSpot, director Junya Ishizaki joked that the studio is well aware of the FromSoftware swamp meme. "It's not like there's a rule or any sort of policy here where it's like we have to have a swamp in there, but it always seems to be [that before you realize] someone's come up with the idea, it's already sort of in there, and it's just sort of taken a life of its own," he said.
