BioWare games rarely shied away from representing different sexualities, so much so that it once got in trouble with Fox News. So, it was a natural progression to go from having a range of queer romances to a transgender character in Dragon Age: Inquisition.
This gave us Cremisius "Krem" Aclassi, a transgender man who the player meets when recruiting Iron Bull. Krem was the first trans character put in a BioWare game, and was well received by fans. However, this was all the way back in 2014, long before many games explored gender identity and included trans characters.
Due to this, the representation can feel a little dated when you go back and play Inquisition now, and there's one thing that will stand out immediately: the trans man is played by a cisgender woman, Jennifer Hale. And while Hale was "honoured" to bring Krem to life, she says that she would now bow out of the role in favour of a trans actor.
"I'll never forget when they called me to see if I would be interested in voicing Krem," Hale tells me over a video call (keep an eye out for the full interview in the new year).
