Bethesda Game Studios is in a tricky position — Todd Howard and his merry band continuously reinvented the RPG genre with Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim, only to have Fallout 4 be met with lukewarm reception and Starfield with outright negativity.
The studio has built up decades of goodwill in the community, but could see that positivity could quickly evaporate if The Elder Scrolls 6 isn't a massive success on the level of its predecessor. In an interview with Esports Insider, former Bethesda lead artist Nate Purkeypile explained his perspective on the expectations that have been placed on Bethesda.
Purkeypile—who worked on Fallout 3, Fallout 4, Fallout 76, Skyrim and Starfield—asserted that living up to the legacy of a game like Skyrim is a monumental task.
"Yes [I believe Bethesda is in a no-win situation], and it definitely factored into me leaving because Skyrim... being one of the top ten games of all-time, how do you beat that?" he explained.
