As spotted by Reddit user young_clayton, news of Gustave's expedition is featured in a newspaper in the game. While this isn't surprising, considering how big a deal it is for Lumiere, this newspaper scrap was reportedly found in Renoir's atelier in the real world. That suggests Gustave may exist outside the canvas, in the real world.
