Today's Xbox Developer Direct concluded with a 20-minute showcase of Playground Games' reboot of Fable, and gave us the announcement we've all been waiting for: Fable will release this Autumn.
In addition, Fable will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC on day one. This is the first time that a Fable game will be available on PlayStation, with the original trilogy being exclusive to Xbox.
The lengthy showcase displayed all the traditional traits of a Fable game: a zero-to-hero journey for our protagonist, marriage, home and business ownership and those classic Britishisms that made the original games so effortlessly charming.
A lot of the systems have a modern feel, such as full dialogue menus with every villager you encounter. The way you're treated will depend on each specific character's traits, as well as your own traits. You gain progress in traits by performing actions and making choices that are congruent with each trait. In the deep dive, we saw a villager who holds a negative opinion of the player-character because the player evicted them from their home. The villager considers the player to be a "rich twat" as a result.
