It's been a long time coming for the Fable reboot.
First announced during the Xbox Games Showcase in 2020, the idea of Playground Games, best known for their work on Forza Horizon, tackling the iconic Xbox RPG franchise seemed like a match made in heaven. The first Fable game is an excellent action RPG, even if it fell short of its lofty expectations. Fable 2 is an even better game, but since then, the franchise has floundered.
While the Fable reboot has appeared sporadically over the years, including its 2024 Xbox Games Showcase trailer featuring Richard Ayoade, there was still a feeling of uncertainty around the game. The decision to delay the game to 2026 last year only added to that uncertainty, especially since 2025 was a year dominated by studio closures and layoffs for Microsoft.
That all changed today during Xbox's 2026 Developer Direct, where we finally got the chance to take a deep dive into what Fable has in store for us this year, including a release date: Fable will launch in Autumn 2026 for Xbox, PC, and PlayStation.
