Highguard is out now, available to play across PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5. In other words, yes, that game that closed off The Game Awards and then dropped off the face of the earth does, indeed, exist.
As expected, Highguard is free-to-play, supported by microtransactions (which admittedly don't sound as egregious as they could be). What is more surprising is that developer Wildlight Entertainment is insisting that Highguard belongs to a genre that hasn't been done before, with a gameplay loop we haven't seen anywhere else.
With Highguard's launch, we finally know a bit more about this PvP game that everyone's been wondering about since its reveal.
For starters, yes, it is free-to-play. And while it does look like typical PvP shooter fare, the devs describe Highguard as a "raid shooter", and say that its gameplay loop should feel unique.
This distinction is made because Highguard centres around three teams claiming and defending a base, while attacking the others. After fortifying your base, you'll want to head out into the open world for upgrades and to fight other players. However, you won't be able to invade another base unless you get the Shieldbreaker sword....
