Epic Games Store Boss Admits "The Launcher Sucks", But Promises Improvements In 2026

To say that gamers hate Epic Games Store would be an understatement. The vitriol is so fierce that many are willing to wait years for exclusivity deals to end just so they can buy the games on Steam instead. It's no small secret that most only download the launcher for Fortnite, and it's not just because of brand loyalty.

As EGS vice president and general manager Steven Allison himself said, "The launcher sucks" — seriously, it took over three years to add a shopping cart. That's a pretty basic feature to miss. But the team is keenly aware that the storefront isn't up to snuff, and plans to finally start focusing on consumer-side improvements through 2026 to try and become a real, genuine Steam competitor, not just a graveyard for all those free games you claim every month and swear you'll get around to.

Epic is planning to incentivize use of EGS with more tie-in Fortnite cosmetics this year.
