At a time when every big company is tripping over itself to explain how it's implementing generative AI into its work, we have a refreshing case of the exact opposite happening. That is because, according to Suda51, NetEase has a company-wide ban on the use of gen AI in games - not that he was interested in it anyway.
This comes from an interview with Eurogamer, in which Suda51 shared his thoughts on the spread of gen AI usage in video games. He makes his own stance clear, while also claiming that NetEase - the parent company of his studio, Grasshopper Manufacture - has backtracked from its previous interest in the technology.
"As far as not using any AI for our games, it started as a NetEase policy for all their companies," says Suda51. "They originally had a section researching and developing AI-related stuff, but at one point, they decided not to do that anymore. They folded that section and told their studios to not use AI in games, to not use it at all."
That should mean no generative AI in Romeo is a Dead Man, Grasshopper's latest game. Suda51 stresses that he doesn't...
