Overwatch Is Officially Dropping The “2” From Its Title

Overwatch as you know it isn’t going anywhere… and neither is its name, well, except for the “2” part. Today, during their annual Spotlight video, Blizzard confirmed that Overwatch 2 is officially going back to just Overwatch.

The move is a signal of Blizzard’s long-term vision for the game. It also introduces a reset of the game’s seasonal structure, beginning with Season One.

Blizzard’s president, Johanna Faries, during a press conference I attended at Blizzard HQ last week, explained that the decision was the result of lengthy discussions with the team.

We talked about this a lot over the last year. The team, probably 20 or 30 people, said hey, we want to go bold… and drop the 2. It felt in unison that emphatically, yes, we think this is the right time for the universe to turn a corner in a big way. I also happen to completely agree with that decision. It was an easy one for me to support.

Game director Aaron Keller added context on why removing the number matters for players. He emphasized that Overwatch isn’t a title meant to be replaced every few years.
