Pokémon Colosseum is back, although perhaps not in the way anyone expected. One of the first Pokémon RPGs for home consoles, Colosseum was first released in 2004, and allowed players to battle other trainers in a series of arena battles with 3D effects and unique mechanics like Shadow Pokémon and snagging.
Now, a fan project called Pokémon Grand Colosseum has revived the classic game, bringing new features and new battles to the classic RPG. While it could be a while before Colosseum makes it to the Switch 2, you can now play an even more expansive version of the game thanks to fan efforts.
Pokémon Grand Colosseum is essentially a ROMhack that tweaks and adds several new features from elsewhere in the Pokémon franchise to the original Colosseum engine. Its first iteration popped up online in 2021, and its current version, 3.1, was released in February 2024.
Grand Colosseum is first and foremost a difficulty hack, changing what its creators call "one of the hardest Pokémon games out there." But despite its many quality-of-life features, it doesn't make Colosseum any easier; according to the devs, Grand Colosseum is actually harder than the original.
