With the (wonderful) Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy eating up over a decade's worth of Square Enix's resources, and the heavily-rumored Final Fantasy 9 remake quite possibly on ice, the odds are slimmer than ever for a remake of the OG PlayStation trilogy's middle sibling. Final Fantasy 8, despite high sales and plenty of acclaim, has nevertheless been saddled with more of a divisive overall reception than either of its immediate peers, but the folks who love it really love it.
Mod community Tsunamods is slowly but surely bringing FF8 to life—and we've got our first look at a quartet of highly promising Balamb Garden backgrounds that back up the team's ambitions. So far, I'm fairly pleased, although with a "playable demo" on the horizon and no word of more, I've fully accepted that I won't be playing this for another decade.
All four lavish redesigns, which in my opinion at least, maintain the timeless art style of the original game, are available for preview via the above tweet. The tweet makes careful note that this isn't AI—which will doubtless prompt many a sigh of relief among us.
