The culmination of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a heartbreaking confrontation between Verso and Maelle, forcing you to pick a side as their goals finally come to a head: do you destroy the painting and free the last vestige of Verso's soul, or save the lives of everyone born within the canvas?
There's no 'right' option: one traps Maelle in her own fiction, never allowing her to confront her grief, and the other kills everyone in the party. But putting aside right and wrong for a moment, which is 'canon'?
It's a tough question, but with Sandfall Interactive looking to expand on the world of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 with a new game in the same universe, it's something the team has been forced to contend with. Ultimately, the answer would prove to be simple: there is no canon.
"We are not going to pick one," writer Jennifer Svedberg-Yen said in an interview with IGN. "Never say never, but there is no canon ending there. It is a Schrodinger's ending."
