VR hit Rec Room is shutting down, its developers have announced, and the reason for the sudden closure is down to a lack of sustainable profit generated by the game, apparently.
In a blog post on the official Rec Room website, the devs say that despite "millions of people...showing up to spend time" in Rec Room "every month", the studio making the game "never quite figured out how to make Rec Room a sustainably profitable business".
According to Rec Room's developers, the costs of maintaining the game "always ended up overwhelming the revenue" generated by the game, and thanks to a "recent shift in the VR market", together with "broader headwinds in gaming", Rec Room basically won't ever be profitable.
Due to the game's impending shutdown, which is happening on June 1st, you can't create a new Rec Room account anymore, and you can't add friends or sign up for the game's premium Rec Room+ membership.
It's also no longer possible to make new monetized user-generated content, but as "a thank you" to Rec Room's players, the devs are discounting every first-party item across the game's stores by 80%, as well as making some membership-exclusive features available for everyone....
