Pirate Survival Title Windrose Has Only Been Out For Two Hours, And There Are Already 20,000 People Playing

Every now and then, a survival-crafting game hits the market and unexpectedly blows up. In 2021, it was Valheim, and in 2024, it was Palworld, with the Pokemon-inspired crafting title seeing millions of players jump in during its opening days. Last year, Dune: Awakening was the closest we came, but given it was based on a giant IP, I'm not sure that counts.

Today, however, 2026's survival surprise could have just emerged, with Windrose, a "survival adventure in the Age of Piracy," releasing in early access, hitting over 20,000 concurrent players in under two hours.

Windrose looks like a cross between Assassin's Creed: Black Flag and Valheim. According to its official description, it offers players the chance to "fight on land and sea, solo or with friends. Build, craft, and explore a vast open world filled with dark secrets. Master soulslite combat and take on challenging bosses, command your ship, and plunder unspoken treasures!"

Complete with land and naval combat, a deep character creator, and tons of crafting options, it looks like just the type of game survival enthusiasts would latch onto. And that, they have.
