Pokemon Champions Meta Is Taking Shape, But There's Hardly Any Variety

Pokemon Champions has been out for almost ten days now, and players are getting into the competitive spirit.

Since its launch, dozens of online tournaments have taken place, with players keen to test their teams and prepare for the shift towards Champions as the primary VGC format.

As the tournaments pile up and online discourse surfaces about certain Pokemon becoming overused, we decided to take a look, analyzing 25 different tournaments to see if Pokemon Champions really does have a meta problem.

On April 9, Pokemon Champions' first tournament concluded. In said tournament, there was one Pokemon that was picked far more than the rest: Incineroar. The Fire- and Dark-type appeared on over 53 percent of teams, almost 20 percent more than the next most popular Pokemon, Sneasler. It doesn't seem like that was a one-off, either.

In our analysis, we looked at the top five most-picked Pokemon across 25 of Champions' most recent tournaments, using data from Limitless TCG. In those 25 tournaments, Incineroar was the top dog cat.

It appeared in the top five most-picked in 24 of the 25 tournaments, and was the most popular pick in 14 of them. Sneasler was second, appearing...
