Kingdom Come: Deliverance occupies a bit of a weird position. Creative director Daniel Vávra publicly voiced support for GamerGate in 2015, positioning the series as a palisade against the 'woke brigade' (or at the time, 'SJWs'). But then came the sequel with an optional LGBTQ+ romance between Hans and Henry, and Vávra denied that the pre-orders tanked because of it, labeling those criticizing the series' new direction as "grifters". The GamerGate community Vávra once courted suddenly felt betrayed by Warhorse, and decried that the company had fallen to progressive whims.
However, while the game boasts a surprisingly nuanced queer romance subplot much to the dismay of those fans, Vávra remains a stalwart in his position that he, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, are not woke. As reported by PC Gamer, in an X post thanking Gayming Magazine for the two nominations the game received in the 2026 Gayming Awards (Fan Favorite and Best LGBTQ+ Character), Vávra made sure to stress that point.
