Iconic Game Jam Ludum Dare to End in 2028, Sort Of | TechRaptor

Ludum Dare, the influential game jam that gave rise to iconic games like Hollow Knight and Inscryption, is coming to an end after 2028, organizer Mike Kasprzak has revealed.

As revealed in a lengthy blog post (thanks, Game Developer), Ludum Dare 64, which is scheduled to happen in October 2028, will be "the last scheduled Ludum Dare event". Kasprzak says he intends to run another event in April 2029, but that this isn't a "scheduled" event and that it "will be the end-end".

Having said Ludum Dare will be ending, Kasprzak then qualifies that statement by saying Ludum Dare "will return as needed", and that another event could take place in the future, although there won't be any further calendar-marked Ludum Dare jams.

In the blog post announcing the end of Ludum Dare, Kasprzak goes into detail about his personal life and struggles, discussing his difficulties with finding employment. He doesn't explicitly draw a connection between this and Ludum Dare coming to a close, but it seems pretty clear that it's one of the motivating factors.

Kasprzak also says that he wants the Ludum Dare community to continue on, but that he wants any spiritual successor events not...
