Final Fantasy 14 has been on a bit of a downward decline ever since the release of Dawntrail, that much is inarguable. I wouldn't say in terms of the quality of content (which has been the best in quite some time in my opinion), but in terms of active players, it's taken a little bit of a nosedive, some of it natural, some of it not so much.
It's a game that has been suffering a decline in active characters for quite some time, and in a newly released census by Lucky Bancho, that decline is continuing, as Dawntrail heads into its last big patch before the game's next expansion. According to Lucky Bancho's data, the game's active character count now sits at 770,000, down from the last census which stood at 930,000, meaning Final Fantasy 14 just suffered a pretty whopping active character drop of 160,000.
Most likely, this data will be taken by Final Fantasy 14's worst actors and spun into more doom and gloom content, but it's worth analyzing properly. For starters, Lucky Bancho's data is inherently flawed. Not only does the census use active character count as a metric, and not player count, it's already pretty...
