A little under two years ago, Final Fantasy 14 launched Dawntrail, its fifth major expansion. At this point, I reckon it's safe to say that Dawntrail's reception has been decidedly mixed. Whereas the preceding two expansions, Shadowbringers and Endwalker, were nigh-universally hailed as excellent entries in a sprawling saga, Square Enix's attempt to essentially kick things off with a brand-new arc following Endwalker's big finale went well for some, poorly for others, and for many, it's ultimately felt like a pretty but somewhat shallow stepping stone toward whatever's next.

And now, we know the shape of things to come. Announced during the game's 2026 North American Fan Festival, Final Fantasy 14: Evercold will bring players to a brand new realm filled with mythical stories and... well... lots of ice. January 2027—book it, that's when we're all getting chilly.

Yoshi-P has explained that Dawntrail launched what is now internally being called "The Godless Realms Saga," AKA what comes after Endwalker tied off the original game's main storyline. "With the launch of Evercold," he explains, "we'll be furthering this exciting storyline."

We'll be visiting the reflection known as the Fourth, which is huge news, but I do know...
