Is everyone getting sick of pirate games? That's honestly what I thought a couple of weeks ago, with both Skull and Bones and Sea of Thieves sitting at pretty paltry 24-hour peaks on SteamDB, with Skull and Bones barely managing to scrape together 200 players a day. Of course, these are just the Steam numbers, and both will probably be more popular on consoles, but they're pretty dire nonetheless.
It really did seem like people weren't all that keen on sailing the high seas right now, but it seems as though it may have just been a case of both Sea of Thieves and Skull of Bones not really doing it for people. That's because Windrose, a new pirate survival adventure game from a studio called Kraken Express, has blown both of its closest competitors out of the water.
Windrose launched a little over 10 days ago, managing to amass more players on Steam than Crimson Desert at the time. As news of the game's popularity spread, Windrose set a peak player count of 222,134 on April 19, which is mightily impressive considering the game had almost zero marketing and is still in early access.
Things have calmed down...
