Earlier this week, Far Cry showrunner Noah Hawley, who is heading up the new live-action adaptation alongside It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia creator Rob Mac, drew backlash for saying that "games are built in a way that doesn't make for the best drama."
"When you play through a video game, you only really move forward through the gameplay section, and then you have these cutscenes that you can skip, so when you adapt those games you have to be aware that makes the human drama kind of irrelevant to the storyline," Hawley explained. "That is death for a show."
Considering the retinue of iconic villains present throughout Far Cry, from Vaas Montenegro and Pagan Min to Joseph Seed and Giancarlo Espito's more recent Antón Castillo, Hawley's comments were met with as much confusion as they were frustration, and not just from fans; Far Cry 4 director Alex Hutchinson posted on LinkedIn, "This is kinda pi**ing me off. And I like Noah Hawley's work."
It's especially damning coming from Hutchinson, considering that earlier games in the series like Far Cry 3 and 4 don't have an option to skip cutscenes, casting doubt on how familiar Hawley is with the series....
