It's Up To You To Figure Out If Saros And Returnal Exist In The Same Universe

Saros releases exclusively on PS5 this Thursday. Not a sequel to Returnal, but its first game since the critically acclaimed 2021 bullet hell, and clearly one that shares a lot of DNA with its predecessor. Saros isn't Returnal 2, not even close, but even before most Housemarque fans have had the chance to play it, they're wondering if the Finnish studio's last two games take place in the same shared universe.

Game Informer had the opportunity to speak with various developers at Housemarque ahead of Saros's arrival this week, including the game's director, Gregory Louden. One of the topics broached was whether Returnal and Saros exist in the same universe, but Louden didn't want to give a straightforward answer.

The interviewer acknowledged that even though Saros and Returnal's respective gameplay might have a lot in common, it's been evident from the outset that these are different characters on different planets embarking on different journeys. That doesn't mean those planets can't exist in the same universe, and Louden has informed players it's up to us to figure out whether Selene and Arjun see the same stars at night when they look up at the sky.
