Baldur's Gate 3 was so successful that it naturally led people to question when Larian was going to make the next one. After making truck loads of money and garnering a huge fanbase willing to do anything for them, the idea of the studio moving onto something new never really entered the minds of many. That's exactly why it hit like a truck when Larian eventually explained that it would be moving on from Baldur's Gate and Dungeons & Dragons as a whole.
Walking away from a beloved masterpiece like this is its own challenge.
Larian CEO Swen Vincke later claimed that another project involving Baldur's Gate was in development before the decision to move on was made, and that many in the studio were delighted they wouldn't have to work on it.
