Helldivers 2's recent reviews on Steam have dropped back down to "Mostly Negative" due to the infamous weapon nerfs in the Escalation of Freedom update.
When Helldivers 2 surprised pretty much everyone all the way back in February and became one of PlayStation's biggest games ever, it seemed like it could do no wrong. That was quickly proven to not be the case, though, as the infamous PSN login requirement debacle in May showed that fans were going to be incredibly vocal when they weren't happy about the state of the game.
We need to stop using the term for games that simply don't deserve it.
Although Arrowhead did quickly fix that requirement and looked to be getting things back on track, the past few weeks have been incredibly rough for Helldivers 2. Most of the issues stem from the Escalation of Freedom update, which massively nerfed the Flamethrower and indicated to most players that balance and a consistent meta was more important than fun.
Escalation of Freedom was so rough for Helldivers 2 that Arrowhead released a statement where it admitted that the update "didn't hit the target", something that was going to be fixed within 60 days....
