Nintendo has confirmed that the unnamed successor to the Nintendo Switch will be backward compatible with the current system, including everything available on Nintendo Switch Online.
Nintendo fans were unclear about backward compatibility for the company’s next system. This was due to most of the Wii U library being remade and resold at full price on the console.
During an earnings call, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa revealed that the Switch’s successor will play the current library of games, along with Nintendo Switch Online games. This was announced on Nintendo Japan’s official Twitter/X account.
Furukawa’s announcement is one of the few concrete pieces of information revealed about Nintendo’s next system. The only other thing known about it (outside of leaks) is that it will be revealed before the end of March 2025.
Is The Switch Backward Compatibility Announcement Damage Control?
It’s notable that this announcement has happened on the heels of an earnings call where Nintendo revised its sales forecast downward, due to the Switch being at the end of its lifespan and selling fewer units.
While the Switch has received some new games in 2024, such as Super Mario Party: Jamboree, they haven’t exactly been triple-A must-have games....
