With its evocative opening and its idea of an unflinching heroine overcoming horrifying obstacles, “Sofie: The Echoes” has promise. However, it is almost impossible to appreciate due to the overwhelming number of bugs, bad design decisions, and an unpolished experience. Players are unable to get past the game’s opening sequence without feeling similarly frustrated, according to Steam user reviews. In its current state, “Sofie: The Echoes” is unplayable. It serves as a reminder that even brilliant concepts require careful planning and refinement to be truly effective. Avoid this one for the time being until the developer fixes its numerous problems, or else you run the risk of an experience that is horrifying for all the wrong reasons!

Batman: Arkham Shadow is a must-have for Dark Knight fans, virtual reality enthusiasts, and anyone else interested in what VR can actually offer. Arkham Shadow redefines virtual reality for the Meta Quest, much like Half-Life: Alyx did for the PC. It’s an amazing story, a technical marvel, and an exciting experience. Regardless of your level of experience with virtual reality, Batman: Arkham Shadow is an essential game that will no doubt help to sell more VR headsets.

Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered may be one of the wildest trips into the depths of hell you’ll ever take. It’s grotesque, it’s filthy, and it’s unapologetically crass—a fever-dream vision of the Underworld brought to life by some of gaming’s most creative minds. Just don’t forget to keep the light close, or the darkness might consume you whole.

A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead’s sound effects, compelling plot, and stunningly eerie visuals undoubtedly add something special to the stealth-horror genre, even though it doesn’t reinvent it. Although it has some shortcomings—the AI can be a little too predictable at times, and the level design occasionally seems to be trying to actively work against you—all in all, it’s a fun stealth experience that both franchise fans and horror enthusiasts will enjoy.

It’s safe to say, that No Room in Hell 2 delivers one hell of a broken experience, the developers have truly abandoned the roots of the original NMRIH, trading quality for a glitch-riddled mess that feels like it crawled out of the deepest pit of development hell. Teleporting zombies, disappearing enemies, and hitboxes are so bad that they make it feel like the zombies are smacking you from the underworld itself, which is just the beginning. It’s a hellish gauntlet of unbindable keys, broken voice chat, and floating heads that make it seem like the game’s trying to pull you into its own version of purgatory. Throw in the fact that there’s only one map, and it becomes clear that the developers were in a rush to throw this disaster out the door. It’s a hell of a ride but for all the wrong reasons. Performance-wise, the game is practically Satan’s gift to lag. Lag spikes, server crashes, and unskippable cutscenes make it feel like you’re being punished for daring to boot up the game.

If you are looking for a Metroidvania-lite, are interested in Kaiju, and are looking to support developers that are working in the Monsterverse you might find value here with Kong: Survivor Instinct. However, it just lacks that special moment that really gives us that “wow” moment when we get to destroy some buildings or even fight another Kaiju.

Hot Wheels Monster Trucks: Stunt Mayhem is a fun game, but the fun will sadly end faster than you think. It only includes Career, Boss, Stunt, and Destruction Modes, with the game being more of a solo experience but also offering split-screen multiplayer. It’s not worth its launch price, and you’d be better off waiting for a sale in the future.

8.5 / 10.0 - Ys X: Nordics
Oct 17, 2024

While some might find the early stages of the game a bit slow, I’d recommend sticking with it or focusing only on essential interactions to progress the quests—it makes the pace feel more manageable. Although I haven’t played many of the previous Ys titles, this one has definitely inspired me to revisit earlier games and further explore the adventures of Adol Christin!

The Until Dawn Remake is a faithful yet enhanced reimagining of a horror classic. The improved visuals, expanded storytelling, and minor gameplay tweaks all contribute to a richer experience for both new and returning players. The game’s performance on the PS5, coupled with its faster load times and better graphics, makes it feel more polished than ever. While some might miss the fixed camera angles and others could find the new lighting system slightly off, these are minor quibbles in what is otherwise a standout remake. If you’ve played the original, you might not find the changes significant enough to warrant a repurchase unless you’re a diehard fan. However, if you’ve never played Until Dawn before, this remake is the definitive version to experience.

Ultimate Zombie Defense 2 puts you in a survival situation where you must hold out against waves of undead. It’s nice to build structures to help you defend against zombies. Unfortunately, there’s nothing unique about the game and it suffers from some bugs. The result is a largely forgettable survival experience easily passed by other games.

Backyard Baseball stood out back then not just for its humor and accessible mechanics but for creating a sense of nostalgia around backyard sports. The success of the ’97 title spawned multiple sequels, many of which included licensed Major League Baseball players as kids in the neighborhood in the following years. This original installment remains a classic, beloved by fans for its simplicity, colorful characters, and the feeling it evokes of long summer days spent playing with friends. While there aren’t any new features or changes other than Steam achievements and leaderboards, the game’s nostalgic and cozy charm is what makes this game the same success as it was back in '97.

6 / 10.0 - Chains of Fury
Oct 5, 2024

Chains of Fury carves out its own space in the boomer shooter genre with its distinct comic-book style and penchant for destruction. It’s loud, brash, and unapologetically focused on mayhem. However, it falls short in key areas like fluid gameplay and intuitive mechanics, especially when compared to Forgive Me Father 2 or Dusk. The clunky controls and occasional cheap enemy spawns can detract from the fun, but for those seeking a mindless shooter to blow off steam, Chains of Fury fits the bill. Overall, Chains of Fury is a fun but flawed experience. While it’s not on the same level as the best in the genre, it’s still worth playing if you’ve already worked through the modern boomer shooter library. For fans of the genre looking to unleash some destruction without too much commitment, this game will scratch that itch—just don’t expect it to go down in boomer shooter history.

FAIRY TAIL: Beach Volleyball Havoc delivers a fun and chaotic arcade volleyball experience, especially for fans of the Fairy Tail universe. With its blend of magical power-ups and recognizable characters, the game certainly has its moments of excitement. However, it ultimately feels more like a mashup of over-the-top mechanics designed to add flair to what would otherwise be a straightforward sports title. While it captures some of the whimsical energy you’d expect from a game like Mario Strikers, it doesn’t offer much beyond the novelty of crazy magical abilities and familiar faces. The gameplay lacks the depth or polish to make it truly stand out, and without a narrative to anchor the experience, it can feel a bit hollow. If you’re looking for a lighthearted, magical twist on volleyball, this game will provide some fun—but don’t expect much more than that.
