5.5 / 10.0 - Wing of Darkness
Jun 22, 2021

It offers a cool aerial battle experience, and it's not as if the genre is bursting with rival candidates, but you might want to think twice about the content-to-price ratio before jumping in.

Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX is an accomplished remake built around a core that's admittedly creaking with age.

$40 for three titles that are still fun to play and are decent representations of the originals isn’t bad value by any means, especially if you’ve never experienced them before or don't own the consoles necessary to play the older versions. It’s just a shame that so little effort seems to have been put into fixing the problems that did exist with these games.

Dry Twice is another example that sexual faux pas and double entendres aren’t as impressive in modern gaming without the writing and gameplay to carry them. Until that changes, I think these new entries will always feel like sloppy seconds.

6.5 / 10.0 - Knockout City

Certain issues are tough to dodge, but Knockout City's nuanced foundation still shows promise.

The scale of its ambition makes the radioactive leak all the more widespread.

7 / 10.0 - Mighty Goose

The biggest problem is that there simply isn't enough of it, due to a short running time. Let's hope this is only the first of Goose's intergalactic adventures.

5.5 / 10.0 - Sludge Life
Jun 3, 2021

Sludge Life is paradoxical. As a video game it's short, shallow, and often rudderless. As an artistic experiment, however, it's powerful, expressive, and bold.

There’s no denying that the series ends on a miserable note, but for what it’s worth, the Legendary Edition reminded me why I was so engrossed in this series over a decade ago.

6.5 / 10.0 - Returnal
May 31, 2021

There’s certainly a lot that Returnal does right and, if nothing else, it is genuinely interesting to see an AAA take on roguelites.

Nishizawa and company could have updated a few old-school level designs and mechanics to improve the experience, but chose instead to preserve the identity of the original. The result is a remake that faithfully sticks to the established formula, warts and all.

4.5 / 10.0 - Insurmountable
May 30, 2021

There may be some good ideas and systems at play in Insurmountable, such as inventory and meter management, but the title is only remotely enjoyable when those meters are almost completely drained and you're near the end of the level.

Despite the passionate performance of its creator, Aluna isn't quite ready to compete with the better action-RPGs out there.

3.5 / 10.0 - Midnight Caravan
May 25, 2021

There’s potential here for something interesting, but potential can only carry you so far... which is up until the point when you get softlocked and have to alt + tab the game.

More R-Type is never a bad thing, even if it comes in a scrappy package like R-Type Final 2.

3 / 10.0 - Just Die Already
May 20, 2021

Just Die Already is a game principally about killing people, but which fails to make the killing fun or satisfying in any way, and as a result presents about as much utility as a power drill made out of wet cardboard.

Whatever Shantae's future holds, her past is worthy of dedication, but it's up to the player to prove themselves worthy of inheriting its legacy.
