GearNuke's Reviews

May 1, 2018

This is more of a fan service update rather than a proper remaster. There are some good changes to the combat system that add more strategy to it, but overall, the experience of the game is still mostly the same if you ignore the partial VR support that is typically limited to a single gameplay mode.

7.5 / 10.0 - Masters of Anima
Apr 30, 2018

Masters of Anima offers a decent mix of strategy and action. Those who enjoy a good balance of puzzles and combat won’t be disappointed here. It is not exactly the most original game but the core mechanics are solid enough for it to be an enjoyable experience.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole feels just like an animated feature from the TV series with the same lewd jokes, satirical social commentary along with an improved combat and exploration system. [OpenCritic note: Khurram Imtiaz separately reviewed the PS4 (9) and Switch (8) versions. Their scores have been averaged.]

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Trilogy is a pretty good port of the first 3 games in the series for the Nintendo Switch. It might not be the complete series since it lacks Ultimate Ninja Storm 4, but the quality of the port is great and it utilizes the hardware of Nintendo Switch rather well to offer a fun Ninja action experience on the go.

Penny-Punching Princess is a simple brawler with a unique economy system thrown in the mix. There are some flaws with its level design and the repetitive nature of its gameplay loop is not for everyone, but it is still a good fit for a portable system where it works best when played in short bursts.

This could have been a truly great game if it was more closely designed and didn't offer as much filler. I can understand that the developers were going for something ambitious here but it unfortunately has resulted in a flawed product that still shows plenty of potential.

6.5 / 10.0 - Gal*Gun 2
Apr 23, 2018

Gal*Gun 2 had the potential to be a fun game but it suffers from some serious design issues. The main gameplay is rather weak and repetitive in nature and the novelty factor ends rather quickly once you realize that there isn’t really much to do here.

9 / 10.0 - Celeste
Apr 18, 2018

A poignant tale that tackles a sensitive subject matter. Celeste is not only a challenging platformer, it is also an emotionally powerful story about dealing with the struggles of mental illness.

5.5 / 10.0 - Extinction
Apr 11, 2018

Extinction feels like a game that could have been a fun side project for a studio developed on a modest budget, instead of being sold at full price as a retail game that struggles to offer enticing content for its asking price.

The combat is fun and encourages the player to experiment with the mechanics but it is held back by a disappointing story and repetitive exploration. As a sequel, the game feels like an improvement overall but still suffers from noticeable flaws.

A fun Atelier game that can be fairly complex with its alchemy mechanics, but it is also simple to understand even if you have never played any of the past entries in the series.

A great story and strong character development for Batman and the Joker makes The Enemy Within one of the best efforts from TellTale Games since the end of Season 1 of The Walking Dead.

An emotional tale that is extremely short but also worth the time spent if you can get over its flaws. The pacing could be a little better and the gameplay could have avoided the repetitive nature of its design but it is still a good experience overall.

9 / 10 - Far Cry 5
Mar 26, 2018

Far Cry series has finally made its return after a long wait, and it's a bigger and more ambitious attempt on the same old classic Far Cry formula that the fans have grown to love across the numerous games.

Kirby Star Allies is the same fun and charming platformer that fans have loved so far. The only thing that takes down the latest adventure of Kirby is that it might be dull if you play it alone in single player so its true potential is hidden in the multiplayer.

6.5 / 10.0 - Sea of Thieves
Mar 23, 2018

Sea of Thieves offers a lackluster voyage past the first few hours, and feels incomplete. However, there is some fun to be had when the game works well as a social sandbox. There's plenty of unrealized potential here, as it's evident that the foundation is there for Rare to build upon in the months to come.

Hakuoki: Edo Blossoms is a fun Otome visual novel that succeeds with what it sets out to achieve. It might have some flaws but it is mostly a positive experience over its predecessor.

This is a pretty good remaster with some nice visual upgrades and it is being sold at a reasonable price, but unless you are a fan of the old school gameplay design of the series, it is best to stick with the new games. However, Rogue is still one of the better Assassin Creed games from the last generation.

9 / 10 - A Way Out
Mar 22, 2018

A Way Out is a solid interactive adventure that never overstays its welcome. It is a little short on replay value and lacks content but if we consider the launch price, there is not much to complain here. If you enjoy co-op games, there is no better recommendation than A Way Out.

Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom is essentially a complete reboot offering a clean slate. The new Kingdom Builder mechanic is extremely addicting and even though the combat has its flaws, the visuals and the beautiful soundtrack make it one of the most enticing RPG released by Level 5 so far.
