The Last Campfire’s journey is one that’s both enchanting and touching, with its wonderful world and fun puzzles making for a memorable adventure throughout. There were a few oddities to encounter as far as performance is concerned and players might feel some sense of familiarity with the puzzle-design, but they’re minor issues in what is otherwise a creatively delightful experience.
Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series is essential for Star Wars-loving PlayStation VR owners, even if it might not necessarily be as good as the Oculus Quest version of the game. You’ll genuinely feel like you’re a part of the Star Wars universe, with the fantastically designed story sequences and epic lightsaber battling making for a gripping experience throughout. It’s worth noting that some of the restrictions of the PlayStation VR headset do see the game losing some of the immersion offered by the Oculus Quest version of the game, especially when it comes to the freedom of movement. Fortunately, it doesn’t deter from the overall experience at all, with Vader Immortal standing out as another unmissable PlayStation VR title.
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition offers an entertaining adventuring experience that can be enjoyed when played solo or with friends – it’s just a shame that the process of playing online with others is so finicky in design. Boy, did it make me miss the glory days of being able to play in local multiplayer, even IF the free ‘Lite’ edition of the game is a delight. If you can look past that though, you really are in for a fun time with Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition. It can be guilty of keeping its gameplay mechanics feeling simple in design, but there’s something so charming about its adventure that it’s easy to find yourself completely hooked in, especially if you’re already a fan of Final Fantasy. Add three friends into the mix and you’ll quickly find that it offers something a bit special…. just make sure you’ve got the patience to keep setting up online dungeon runs.
Windbound offers an enjoyable blend of survival and adventuring gameplay, though some technical issues and a tricky difficulty can make for some frustrating moments. There’s certainly more good than bad to be found on your journey through the Forbidden Islands and there’s plenty of enjoyment to be had sailing through its turbulent seas, but there’ll also be times where a particularly brutal (and sometimes unfair) battle with an enemy or a random glitch will annoy you too… Still, if you’re a fan of adventures that implement some neat survival elements, WIndbound will certainly appeal to you. It might not be perfect in all facets of its design, but it still manages to offer an entertaining adventure that’ll keep you hooked to your Nintendo Switch for some time.
I couldn’t help but to feel underwhelmed by Giraffe and Annika, with its adventure doing little to excite during its fairly short runtime. It’s not that anything was particularly bad about the game… there’s just not a whole lot to it. Sure, the vibrant world and quirky narrative do bring some charm to the journey and I enjoyed the rhythm-based battles, but everything else about Giraffe and Annika lacked any real spark of excitement to makes its adventure one that’s worth investing your time into.
Jenny LeClue – Detectivu offers both an intriguing mystery to unravel and brilliant crime-solving mechanics… it really makes for one heck of an enjoyable adventure. I was glued to my Nintendo Switch from start to end, with the constant unravelling of clues and solving of puzzles immersing me further into the case. If you’re a fan of crime-solving mysteries that have a unique and quirky twist, you REALLY won’t want to miss out on Jenny LeClue – Detectivu.
Between its dark tale, its stellar visuals, and its fun and varied gameplay mechanics, there’s plenty to keep you totally absorbed in INMOST’s emotional adventure. I really enjoyed playing as the trio of unique characters and seeing their tale through to its conclusion, whilst their journey along the way was enjoyably perilous as you look to vanquish the darkness around them. There were a few aspects of the game that didn’t always hit the mark, such as the trial-and-error gameplay of the Hero and the occasional bouts of clunkiness when platforming, but these are minor hindrances in what is otherwise a gripping and entertaining adventure.
Manifold Garden is a really special game, with its beautifully hypnotic world and enjoyable puzzle design making for a truly unique experience. Admittedly, some of the puzzles themselves can be pretty simple in design and there aren’t too many intricate mechanics involved, but you won’t mind too much given how mind-blowing the game world is to explore.
Peaky Blinders: Mastermind’s puzzle-solving is intuitive and clever, whilst it manages to capture the vibe of the TV series perfectly – even if it is lacking voice acting and the iconic theme music. It’s just a shame that it doesn’t have a whole lot of depth, with the puzzles themselves only offering one real solution and lacking any real replayability after you’ve beat them once. Still, that initial playthrough is thrilling and you’ll feel as clever as Tommy Shelby when a plan plays out perfectly. Peaky Blinders: Mastermind is one of the better TV show adaptations out there and fans of the series will certainly enjoy the puzzling-action that the team at FuturLab have whipped up.
Battletoads manages to stay true to the source material, all whilst offering an array of varied and fun gameplay mechanics that really spice up the experience. I had a good time battling through each level, whether that was when fighting in classic beat ‘em up action, racing through on a jet-bike, or sliding my way away from a big monstrous threat. Sure, a few mini-games can fall short of the mark at times and the difficulty could feel a bit forced, but it didn’t stop Battletoads from being a really enjoyable experience. It’s just a shame that there isn’t any online multiplayer included, with Battletoads really lending itself perfectly to playthroughs with friends. Of course, local play is possible, but with the game included in Xbox Game Pass it would have been perfect for online romps with other players. Hopefully, it’s something the developers might patch in sometime in the future because it feels like a missed opportunity right now…
Mortal Shell isn’t shy in showing off its Souls-like inspirations, but it offers enough fresh ideas of its own to stand out as an entertainingly brutal adventure. Swapping Shells remained neat throughout and added an extra element of strategy to different encounters, whilst the intricate combat mechanics and mesmerising world will keep you engaged all the way through to the game’s conclusion. Sure, it could be frustrating in places thanks to the occasional glitch or overwhelming group of enemies, but there weren’t any stand out issues that make Mortal Shell difficult to recommend. It’s definitely one of the better Souls-likes out there and fans of the genre will have a good time trudging through its desolate world.
Panzer Paladin offers an enjoyable and nostalgic action-platforming experience that’s a whole lot of fun to play, even if it CAN be exceptionally tough in places. Between the clever use of weapons, the neat level design, and the fantastic bosses, there’s plenty of frantic action to dive into that’ll keep you hooked in throughout the surprisingly lengthy campaign. The only real issues that bugged me with the game were the lack of checkpoints and the loss of weapons during boss encounters, but they’re minor problems that don’t affect gameplay too much. Still, they may prove frustrating to some players, especially with Panzer Paladin’s already tough difficulty… it’s certainly not for the faint-hearted and will test even the most experienced of old-school gamers’ gaming prowess.
CARRION is gloriously gory and playing as a tentacled monster is fun from start to end, even if the main gameplay loop could grow a little repetitive in places. Slipping your way through the laboratory and pulling off all sorts of gruesome kills was always an absolute blast though, whilst unlocking new abilities always felt rewarding – especially when they had to be utilised in some of the environmental puzzles or when stealthily sneaking past some of your deadlier prey. It is a shame there isn’t an in-game map to make traversal easier and simply unlocking new biomass points could get a little repetitive at times, but it’s hard to complain too much when you get to wreak havoc as a destructively monstrous blob of gore and tentacles. Best. Protagonist. Ever.
Marvel’s Iron Man VR delivers an excellent action-packed experience that really allows players to see how fricking brilliant it’d be to be Tony Stark. Besides the fact that the Iron Man suit itself is intuitively designed to feel satisfying to use whether you’re simply flying around or blasting away at enemies with its vast arsenal, the game also just so happens to offer an engaging storyline and genuinely enjoyable missions to complete too. Some loading issues and the occasional performance hiccup do see the game falling a little short in some aspects of its design, but for the most part it really captures the vibe of being Iron Man perfectly. Marvel’s Iron Man VR is simply the best representation of being a superhero that I’ve played in virtual reality.
Superliminal offers a puzzling experience that isn’t only unique and ingenious in design, but also a hell of a lot of fun to play. Best of all, it really feels at home on the Nintendo Switch, with the port offering slick visuals that certainly make the game’s weird and wonderful world a sight to behold in the palm of your hands. A few sketchy puzzles towards the backend of the game do see Superliminal falling slightly short of puzzling perfection, but anyone who appreciates a game full of clever and unique puzzling enigmas will DEFINITELY want to give the game a play.
Hunting Simulator 2 isn’t a bad game, but its slow-paced gameplay and focus on realism does mean that it isn’t always fun to play. Whilst I’m sure plenty of gamers will enjoy the process of tracking animals carefully, following the rules to a tee, and investing themselves completely in their gear, I just found that it all got a bit boring fast. There’s no denying that it does have its moments where it shines and getting a clean kill can be rewarding, but for the most part Hunting Simulator 2 is just a bit of a drag.
I was pleasantly surprised by just how much I enjoyed Across the Grooves, with its emotional and intriguing tale keeping me hooked in until the very end. Add to that some fantastic artwork and music that always fit the vibe of each scene perfectly, and it’s easy to see that Nova-Box have something special on their hands here. I have no doubt that the visual novel setup of Across the Grooves won’t be for everyone and there were occasional moments where the story could fall a little short of the mark, but for the most part it offers a fascinating narrative that I really enjoyed being a part of.
Star Wars Episode I: Racer offers an improved take on the Nintendo 64 classic that still feels fun to play now, even if it is a little flawed in places. The exciting track design and frantic nature of the pod racing itself makes for some really hectic and enjoyable showdowns, whilst the improved frame rate ensures the game feels super smooth to play. Of course, it isn’t perfect and some sketchy textures, inconsistent (and often too easy) difficulty, and distorted audio problems do hinder the experience a fair bit. They’re not problematic enough to make Star Wars Episode I: Racer feel like a bad game, but they’re still obvious issues that can be hard to ignore in places. Still, it’s clear that Star Wars Episode I: Racer has managed to stand the test of time and it’s easy to recommend this remastered release for both returning gamers and those who never got the chance to race in one of the iconic pod racers back in 1999.
Colt Canyon offers a relentlessly challenging twin-stick shooting experience that’s both frantic and fun in design, regardless of some early frustrations as you learn how to get… well… GOOD at the game. Admittedly, the challenge can be a little overbearing at times and it doesn’t offer anything that you wouldn’t have seen in the genre before, but the Wild West setting and the satisfyingly quick-paced brutal action do make up for it – especially if you play the game in co-op with a buddy.
Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling offers an enjoyable and charming adventure that fans of Paper Mario are sure to adore. The battling is surprisingly strategic and fun, the puzzle-solving is clever, whilst the world itself is super creative and vibrant in design – it all comes together to make for a very jolly bug-filled escapade that Nintendo Switch fans shouldn’t ignore.
