Red Matter is one of the best PSVR titles I’ve played this year, both visually and mechanically. It takes full advantage of both Move Controllers as you swap between various tools in order to solve puzzles, investigate, and traverse. You have multiple methods of transport as well as an option for both snap and smooth turning (coming soon). This great VR puzzle adventure title will have you virtually scratching your head as you try to work out the solutions to the clever puzzles.
If you like narrative-based adventure games, you need to have The Council: Complete Season in your collection. It’ll be hard to find another game in the same genre which tops the suspense, intrigue and excitement you’ll have within this 12-15 hour adventure. Sure, there aren’t as many major branching pathways as games such as Detroit: Become Human, but there is a lot of minor changes and certain things you can and can’t talk about or see if you’ve not invested your skill points accordingly.
The Council: Episode 5:- Checkmate has returned back to the outstanding quality of the first episode. I feel the game was nicely brought to an end via the various pathways you can go down, each resulting in a similar yet different final conclusion. All of your actions up until this point will be brought to your attention and you’ll be made aware that the game has been watching what you’ve been doing, but the situation won’t change as much as you may hope it would. Regardless, I feel a lot of info and exposition was placed within this episode, as the last episode rushed in some new mechanics to prepare you, and overall it felt like a satisfying end to a nine-month journey.
I thoroughly enjoyed the five hours or so I spent playing Figment. I never once felt bored or that it overstayed its welcome, to me it was the perfect length. It’s a charming adventure with very satisfying and creative puzzles complimented by an attractive art style. It does a fantastic job of exploring the human mind’s inner demons and balancing the heavy subject matter with light-hearted dialogue and musical moments. Minor combat and language issues aside, I would whole-heartedly recommend Figment to all who wish to take a journey into the mind.
In Death is a game that is definitely worth adding to your collection of PlayStation VR titles. Despite the Roguelike gameplay, you will find that with each death, you are ready to jump right back in immediately to try and better your last run. The great visuals and sound effects are aesthetically pleasing, and the only small details that people may not like are easily forgivable by the overall experience the game has to offer.
The Persona 3 and 5 Endless Night Collection is both a visual and audio masterpiece wrapped within a game. All three games look stunning on both the PS4 and PS Vita as well as run perfectly regardless of the massive power advantage the console has over the handheld. Persona 4 comes with a story and an actual plot yet the others skip that and takes you straight to the main reason people play these games, the awesome dancing! Either way, both styles work really well and offer enough exposition to keep you engaged between dance-sessions. If you’re a fan of rhythmic games, the Persona 3 and 5 Endless Night Collection needs to be in YOUR collection. You’ll be unable to stop yourself from ‘Dancing All Night within the Moon and Starlight!’
Resonance of Fate 4K/HD Edition is another brilliant remaster from the amazing team at tri-Ace, following Star Ocean: The Last Hope‘s example. This hidden gem was most likely overlooked by a lot of people last generation due to its rather unusual mechanics and reportedly confusing story. However, now that the game has been fully updated for the PS4 and PC with a multitude of customisations options, new textures, a more stable framerate, and a massive boost in the resolution, I can’t recommend this game enough.
As the saying goes, I came for the imagery, I stayed for the engaging story and interesting gameplay. Bendy and the Ink Machine is on my list of ‘hidden gems’ of 2018 for sure as it’s a game which may have flown under a few peoples radars, yet it deserves a much bigger push into the limelight. Sure, the puzzles are basic, the hiding from the creatures is overly forgiving, and the combat is rather simplistic as well as a bit too unforgiving in certain areas. However, the other core aspects balance these out and end up overshadowing them. The Borderlands-like graphics help to make what would be a rather horrific state of affairs into a more casual and less disturbing set of events, all whilst retaining the uneasiness and suspenseful emotions it wishes to portray.
Darksiders III [3] delivers a different set of core mechanics over the previous games, both for better and worse. The combat feels heavier and more precise as it takes on a more strategic approach over the button-mashing prequels, however, it comes at the expense of ramping up the difficulty in order to fit the mould. I found the game to be both frustrating and confusing, in terms of its combat and puzzles, to the point where I actually appreciate the fact the developers are making us think about what we're doing as we take our time in order to progress. Will Darksiders III be for everyone? Probably not. As of release, the game is buggy, contains glitches, employs the new combat style, and prefers small areas over big open-world ones. However, despite these points, I was captivated once I got to grips with the controls and found myself hooked onto both the story and the outcome of Fury's adventure down on Earth.
Hitman 2 is the best stealth-based action game I’ve played this entire generation. The game is extremely generous with the amount of content you get, especially if you can get hold of season one and unlock all of the extra content both for free play and the entire first game’s story arc. As someone who’s not a fan of stealth games, the fact I couldn’t put it down just shows how brilliant the game design is and how addictive the developers have created it to be. Completing the challenges isn’t a chore, it’s exciting, entertaining, and above all, extremely addictive. Before long you’ll be replaying the same mission over and over just because…
OVERKILL’s The Walking Dead is a fun, chaotic take on the team-based horde and exploration genre made popular by Left 4 Dead. Sure, the lack of voice chat in-game is crippling within this genre, with the only substitute being to use Steam Chat or a third-party method – making this as cumbersome as the Nintendo Switch voice-chat options! However, there is nothing more satisfying than mindlessly slaughtering waves of zombies with a bunch of friends! I’m not much of a multiplayer gamer but if I have to play one, I much prefer cooperative ones to pvp. If you enjoy this type of game it’s worth picking up, if only to let some frustration out at the end of the day by beheading walkers with your machete.
Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics is a great attempt at a Tactical RPG based within the Achtung! Cthulhu universe. Sure, the game has a few flaws in regards to its obstructive camera, lack of save options and spikes in difficulty, but it also has a lot of positives going for it as well. The combination of the realistic and the fantastical is very interesting and the various creatures who come to slaughter you are both interesting and exciting. Other than equipping your only four operatives, there is little to do between missions yet the fusion of exploration and numerous combat events within the missions helps make this game stand on its own in the genre.
Overall, I enjoyed my time with Toast Time: Smash Up! It is a nice call-back to the simpler times in gaming. Honestly, I could see myself playing this game back when I was 10 with my original Game Boy. It is a wacky time when you’re able to get 4 friends together to play! The single player was addictive enough that players will be able to ignore the difficulty being off at times. All in all, though, playing this game made me that much more excited for breakfast tomorrow morning!
Melbits World is a great multiplayer game for people of all ages who have access to an iOS or Android device. Sure, the game gets a bit frustrating and difficult as you move throughout the various levels, but that’s the fun of it! If you liked stressful, yet entertaining, games such as Overcooked 2 then you’ll love Melbits World. The fact you can even customise your own Melbit before you begin playing is a small feature which makes the game more interactive and relatable as you can unlock new features to represent yourself in-game. This also gives you a reason to save the Melbits – it’s your best buddy now, don’t let your mate push him off the world and to its death!
The Spyro Reignited Trilogy is a masterpiece in terms of its visual reconstruction of the original games, but it falls in a few other areas. Toys for Bob have created a beautiful, alive, colourful, and almost CGI animated world in which all fans of Spyro will simply adore jumping back into in order to relive their childhood. Sat on the sidelines with no modernisation support are those who require subtitles for the major exposition cutscenes as this has been rather annoyingly omitted from this almost perfect remake. All three games have a sense of progression as more and more abilities and mechanics are introduced, this makes all three games hours of fun and enjoyment for all the family in this family-friendly 3D platforming adventure.
The Forest was an experience that took me some getting used to because I'm not used to non-linear games. However, once you realise that you can do whatever you want, you eventually grow to enjoy it. It did take me a few hours to appreciate what the game has to offer, but once I figured out what I was doing, I understood the hype behind the game a little bit more. Trophy hunters beware, this game will be a VERY difficult game to achieve the coveted Plat!
State of Anarchy: Master of Mayhem is an aesthetically pleasing top-down shooter with a cartoony look to it. It’s all about knocking down rioters, blasting aliens, bringing down giant spaceships, and destroying buildings, yet it’s all done in a narrative-less game which looks like it’s been drawn on a piece of paper. Although the game doesn’t vary too much in terms of its gameplay, as it really only has three different segments of play-styles, it does mix things up with new weapons and abilities being given to you almost every level.
Diablo III is one of those games that seems to come out on every platform, but there is a damn good reason for it. Even after almost 7 years, it still holds up as one of the best dungeon crawlers we have seen to date. The graphics are great, the music is great, the overall experience of Diablo III: Eternal Collection still gives me eternal joy. It’s rejuvenated my hype for the day when Blizzard Entertainment finally announces Diablo 4.
If you’re looking for a truly immersive and realistic boxing game then Creed: Rise to Glory in VR is calling your name! Most First-Person VR games these days have nice controls with dual controller support and physics which work like they do irl, but Creed goes one step further and makes every punch you throw feel real based on the angle, speed, and impact they all make in real life with the air. There was an issue with a ‘HammerFist’ punch being used in the Multiplayer mode, this has since been fixed in PvP matches, so the MP is fair and based solely on your skills you gain within training and in the ring in the main story mode.
Tetris Effect is a combination of brilliant dynamic music, spectacular visuals, and solid Tetris gameplay, all rolled into one must-have package. Not only will you be treating yourself to a great version of Tetris, but you’ll also be giving your eyes and ears a gift they’ll never forget. On top of the 1-2 hour ‘story mode’, you can also try out fifteen set modes/playstyles as well as participate in weekly challenges. There’s a lot of content and fans of the classic game will simply love what the developers have done with the license this time around.
