1 / 10.0 - Blood Waves
Mar 21, 2019

Personally, I would strongly advise everyone against picking up Blood Waves, even if it’s featured within a sale. The game is not worth time and money you will put into it. If the game was updated with more locations, better combat, less-spongy enemies, a decent soundtrack, more original and define enemies and protagonists, and maybe allow for fantastical weaponry and abilities – then it MAY be worth trying out and re-visiting. However, until that happens, I don't see myself returning to the game any time soon.

4 / 10.0 - Radio Squid
Jul 24, 2020

Radio Squid is a game with conflicting ideas that makes it partially enjoyable but equally just as frustrating. The bomb power is useful and a feature that feels fair and challenging whereas the ability to hurt yourself just feels the opposite. The claustrophobic arenas make the trek to reach the note to start your attack all the more pointlessly dangerous, meaning you will likely take cheap hits before you even start attacking yourself. Then, the wall wraps mean you have way too many things to keep track of, including your own projectiles. It all adds up to an experience that feels unfair and a bit bland.

4 / 10.0 - Lucius III
Jan 31, 2019

While I try to have respect for indie games, they are just not always to my liking. I work full time so don’t get as much gaming time as I would like and so I want to spend my time playing games I’m going to enjoy. I thought I would enjoy Lucius III as it looked like my type of game but sadly it fell short of my expectations. Basically, it’s probably one of the worst games I’ve played in a long time. The developers clearly had big ambitions for Lucius III but they were in over their heads and couldn’t deliver on their vision with their resources.

Fans of Touhou games may find more enjoyment than others with Burst Battle. If you are looking for a hard-core fighting game with solid controls, a deep story and a very active online player-base then I wouldn't say this game was for you. If you don't mind clunky controls and a serious challenge in completing everything game has to offer, then this one may be for you.

4.5 / 10.0 - Generation Zero
Apr 30, 2019

If you miss the ’80s then Generation Zero may be the game for you, personally though I thought it was an odd choice for this style of game. It truly was a beautiful looking game which has been dragged down by the poor gameplay. Maybe if the map was smaller and more condensed then it would have appealed to me more, as well as not being as tedious and boring with the vast open nothingness.

In all honesty, my favourite parts of Little Witch Academia VR: Broom Racing were the ones without gameplay. I enjoyed being with the 3D character models, discussing parts from the show and the story within the game. It felt like I was actually in the show, offering a unique up-close experience which was nice and immersive after recently enjoying the show. The broom racing is fun, but it was a little too simple and repetitive – you’re probably best playing it in short bursts rather than sinking many hours into it in one go. If you’re a massive fan of the show, definitely check the game out as it’s fun feeling like you’re within this magical world. If you’re not, it’s a decent time killer if you have a VR headset, it’s just not amazing.

5 / 10.0 - Mythic Ocean
Oct 19, 2020

Mythic Ocean contains an interesting premise but, ultimately, didn’t use its full potential. While it creates a stunning world, the gameplay is rather lacking and nonexistent after finding all the pages as all that’s left to do is talking. I genuinely felt like this game turned into a pure Visual Novel and it doesn’t help that that game ‘fast travelled’ me right to the Gods, removing the need to manually swim to them. However, I loved interacting with each God and getting to know them better, although that was sadly the only thing I truly enjoyed about this game as I didn’t care much for the main story.

5 / 10.0 - Back In 1995
Jun 18, 2019

There are some clever and innovatively retro-feeling features in Back in 1995 that I must give a lot of credit to Throw the Warped Code Out for. The game has a heart-warming incentive behind it that makes it very likeable but unfortunately, it just doesn’t stand out as a game in its own right. I think the story is eventually the strongest part of this game but it just doesn’t feel fun to play, neither is it scary, so I can’t really recommend it. Developers are releasing remakes now (the recent Resident Evil 2 Remake was fantastic) and removing the tank controls and static cameras for more modern mechanics, which shows that maybe some of these were limitations of the hardware rather than reasons that made the classics great. Personally, I think Back In 1995 didn’t need to replicate everything, it would have been good to see it improve on them.

Rad Rodgers: Radical Edition sets out to be a product that us 90s kids can look at in nostalgic joy. In some ways, they really capture that with the Earthworm Jim type gameplay with more adult humour (you can turn off blood and swearing in the menu!). Unfortunately, they also captured some of the more annoying parts of those games as well. I think the game has good ideas, but I did not feel like it was executed well enough for modern gamers wanting a nostalgic trip or those looking for a solid platformer.

If you’re a fan of the point-and-click adventure genre then you may enjoy Tango: The Adventure Game. I’m a fan of the genre, always have been. Steam currently shows it as 83% positive by players. However, I’ve personally played a lot better, games that I still think about years after playing them. Tango: The Adventure Game was ok to play for a few hours, but won’t be a game I will be reminiscing about in years to come and just felt dated to me.

5 / 10.0 - Witch Thief
Jun 12, 2019

Bullet hell games are meant to be challenging because when you beat that boss you’ve been struggling with it can feel highly rewarding. Witch Thief doesn’t feel like that though because the amount of frustration that you go through just really isn’t worth it in the end. The story is underwhelming, the dialogue confusingly unfunny and the characters are generic and unlikeable. It feels fun to play at times, weaving between the waves of attacks is the highlight of the experience but you never feel like you give anything back. Instead, you just have to survive long enough for the health bars to disappear out of boredom rather than you being good. There is too much emphasis on luck and what makes this game unique is also its biggest letdown which makes it an unworthy addition in the bullet hell shmup genre.

Despite the negatives I found with the game, The Bard’s Tale IV: Barrows Deep has incredible promise. The developers are actively responding to all of the customer issues and appear to take these concerns seriously with promptly made patches and ongoing support. I wholeheartedly believe that between constructive feedback from players and well thought out solutions from the developers that The Bard’s Tale IV can become the game it has every right to be.

SingStar Celebration was more of an afterparty than a celebration for me. The variety and number of songs included aren't great and the removal of the four-player mode seems like they have taken a step backwards. However, the social aspect and the community built within the game itself would be perfect for those who believe they are the next big star and want to show it off with fellow like-minded people.

5.5 / 10.0 - RGX Showdown
Oct 1, 2018

RGX Showdown is a racing game that comes from the creative minds of great developers of yesteryear racing games. However, this game feels like it is only in Early Access at this point. That being said, it means that ShortRound Games can make this into a really fun game by just adding a few options such as co-op against friends, as well as a single player vs AI option. The game has great potential, however, the missteps it has begins to drag the game down.

5.5 / 10.0 - Boundless
Sep 29, 2018

Boundless is an interesting game, as it’s definitely not afraid to wear influence on its sleeves. It has its faults, all games do! Unfortunately, the very slow start to the game will push many gamers away. However, if you make it over that hump, the only thing that will slow you down is your imagination as there is SO MUCH you can do in the game.

5.5 / 10.0 - 911 Operator
Oct 19, 2018

911 Operator is an interesting game which truly shows what it is like to be the person at the end of the phone who has to direct emergency crews around cities. This won’t make you envy the job but hopefully, give empathy. The game suffers from the repetitive nature of the missions, but I don’t think anyone is an expecting fast high-octane action. For the price, I imagine fans of strategy and simulation games will get the most out of this title!

Petoons Studio must be commended for creating such an authentic Peppa Pig experience with My Friend Peppa Pig. My daughter loved playing along with Peppa Pig and her friends, she was fascinated that she was controlling a game that looked identical to the cartoon that she enjoys so much.

Kill It With Fire is a simple concept by design, but that doesn’t make it bad. In fact, when you have 30 minutes spare it’s a perfect time killer. It really is as simple as it sounds, offering sadistic fun as you take out revenge on all those creepy crawlies you’ve screamed at over the years. The joy is in getting the upgrades and finding the different weapons you can use, then going back through the levels and getting those damn red jumping spiders back. If you’re after a pretty easy 100% and have some hatred towards spiders, this is unmissable. Otherwise, I’m not sure there’s enough here to make it a game that needs to be played.

6 / 10.0 - Until You Fall
Feb 19, 2021

Until You Fall is simple but fun. It’s not going to win any awards but it’s certainly going to get you moving and feeling a bit awesome for a while. It does get a bit repetitive, so it’s not going to grab you for long periods at a time, but the sword fighting is enjoyable enough to make you want to come back for more. The worlds are pretty, if a little lacking in substance, and the structured and limited level design is something that holds the game back a little. Basically, if you’re in the mood to swing a couple of virtual melee weapons at big baddies, and who isn’t, then you’ll really enjoy Until You Fall.

Totally Reliable Delivery Service is truly an enigma, what makes it so brilliant is what also makes it so damn frustrating. I would recommend the experience to all of my friends, as I really did experience laughs that I’ve never had before, but due to the frustration it caused me, I wouldn’t wish the game on someone I mildly dislike. The way to obtain the most fun is to simply mess around with other people and experiment with new and unique ways to deliver the packages, I definitely didn’t have the patience to be the postman it wanted me to be.
