Critic Reviews for Little Witch Academia: VR Broom Racing
If you're looking for a Little Witch Academia digital experience, then VR Broom Racing lets you spend time with the cast in an authentic, if entirely frictionless game experience. Younger players will likely find more to like here, and once the online component is added there should at least be a reason to come back.
Every design choice made in this game is sensible and wrong at the same time. The motion controls are an essential feature that rob you of any capacity for precision movements. The courses themselves are marked by a ‘race track’ that enables navigation and interrupts your sense of elevation. The disappearing dialogue boxes keep cutscenes from feeling static while distracting you from what’s being said. VR Broom Racing constantly gets in its own way, and the game is somehow right to do so. If you’re looking for a well-designed magical racing game, Little Witch Academia: VR Broom Racing is just what you’re looking for. I’m just not sure you’ll enjoy it.
Little Witch Academia: VR Broom Racing is a title better swept under the rug. It offers a barebone experience with little to no content and the only saving grace is that they managed to make the actual broom handling feel very intuitive.
The core gameplay of Little Witch Academia: VR Broom Racing is promising enough that I'd love to see a sequel. As it is, it's a bit too thin on content and could definitely use more gameplay elements to help it compete with similar racers.
As the game stands now it’s enjoyable for a couple of hours it’ll take you to play the single-player, but sorely missing a quick play mode, and the multiplayer for a fully-fledged broom racing experience.
In all honesty, my favourite parts of Little Witch Academia VR: Broom Racing were the ones without gameplay. I enjoyed being with the 3D character models, discussing parts from the show and the story within the game. It felt like I was actually in the show, offering a unique up-close experience which was nice and immersive after recently enjoying the show. The broom racing is fun, but it was a little too simple and repetitive – you’re probably best playing it in short bursts rather than sinking many hours into it in one go. If you’re a massive fan of the show, definitely check the game out as it’s fun feeling like you’re within this magical world. If you’re not, it’s a decent time killer if you have a VR headset, it’s just not amazing.
Overall I think this is quite a fun game and would be enjoyed by fans of the series and people who are just interested in the broomstick flight aspect. The actual flying is great and I like the customization. I do wish the difficulty was a little higher, but it’s still fun to navigate the courses at high speed. There’s also that it’s fairly short on content, but that’s about standard for most virtual reality games.
Little Witch Academia: VR Broom Racing is a great experience for fans of the series as it doesn’t over-promise what it is, a Broom Racing VR game with Little Witch Academia characters. You know exactly what you’re getting yourself into, and there’s a decent customization system added for good measure. It’s a simple experience that doesn’t push itself too hard but does enough to be fun for a few laps around Luna Nova Magical Academy.
