Overall, Fatal Fury First Contact is a good first attempt at a Neo Geo Pocket Color fighting game. It may be simple, but it really just makes me appreciate the effort in SNK Gals’ Fighters even more. This one is severely lacking in the presentation department, making it purely a fighter for fans that want to play it.
As a big fan of Super Meat Boy, Super Meat Boy Forever didn’t live up to my expectations. It’s still a good game with new and interesting mechanics, but the game feels like more of a chore than it should. That being said, I’m still incredibly grateful Super Meat Boy Forever has seen the light of day. This is especially true when you consider the long and difficult development cycle.
While I didn’t have as great a time with Sackboy: A Big Adventure as I did Astro’s Playroom, this was still a fun time. It’s definitely a much longer platformer, and it offers a lot more challenge as well. It doesn’t take as much advantage of the DualSense controller on PlayStation 5, but this is likely due to the game being available on PlayStation 4 as well. Either way, Sackboy is still a strong platformer for friends and families to play together this holiday season. The levels are diverse, the music is catchy, and the charm is excellent.
Overall, Observer: System Redux is a fantastic next gen upgrade. While the original was already a great title, this is easily the definitive edition. Few titles accurately capture the experience of a daunting mystery like this one. If you’re looking for a great cyberpunk thriller, this one should definitely be on your radar.
Overall, Tanuki Justice has been one of the most fun sidescrolling run & guns I’ve endured. Paired with a colorful pixel background and rhythmic synth music, on top of exciting gameplay, the false nostalgia brings me back to when I first started playing video games.
Overall, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is an excellent successor to the original Hyrule Warriors. When it comes to being a Breath of the Wild prequel, it captures the spirit and essence, but it also somewhat tarnishes the story that game told. Despite that, the gameplay is fun and inventive enough to see this new story through, and it should still be enjoyable for fans. If it means this will fill the void till we get the proper sequel, then so be it.
The reality is that Godfall looks and plays like a next generation game, but it’s such a hollow experience. Honestly, it’s surprising how overwhelmingly average the game is, given that there are several positive aspects to it. Even for diehards of the looter genre, this is a tough one to recommend.
It’s really a pity, as I believe if Twin Mirror had a lot more development time and a bigger budget to refine and flesh out its story, it would have been a great narrative murder mystery to rival Life is Strange. This isn’t to say I hated my time with the game. I still enjoyed the world, characters, and especially its overall central premise, which I found to be less grandiose and more grounded. Unfortunately, the short length, rushed plot, and presentation issues bring it down a bit.
Overall, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is an endearing game for puzzle lovers and the young at heart. With colorful characters, quirky dialogue, and familiar puzzle interfaces, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 offers an addicting experience anyone will enjoy.
Generally, I would describe Spirit of the North as a nice and easy, low-pressure game to play. It’s also a great tech demo for next-gen open world games. With the winter coming and indoor time inevitable, I recommend picking this one up.
Ultimately, The Falconeer is an interesting use of a few hours. The gameplay is mostly strong thanks to the engaging combat, albeit a challenging and frustrating experience. It’s just unfortunate that the game is full of repetitive tasks that suck the fun out of the game.
The post expansion content at this point in time is decent. While the season is far from over, it does look like Bungie plans on expanding on Beyond Light. However, the current amount of content available, including post launch, is very bare-bones when compared to prior expansions. Because of that, and combined with the very mixed reactions at launch, Beyond Light is an ultimately flawed project.
If you’ve only been hearing about Hades, you’re doing yourself a disservice by not playing it. The gameplay is addicting and full of variety, and the Greek mythology theme is incredibly enticing. With great performances, fantastic music and an incredible art style, Hades easily ranks high among the best of 2020.
While Bright Memory isn’t going to win any awards, it’s still a pretty commendable effort from FYQD. The trailer for the remake looks promising, as it seems to already address some of the issues in the original game. Looks can be deceiving, but we’ll still keep an eye on Infinite to see if it can change our minds. As for this entry, it’s not a terrible experience for $8, but it’s not exactly one we recommend.
When it comes down to it, Morbid: The Seven Acolytes does a lot more good than bad. The music and gameplay are stellar throughout and it takes a unique visual approach to a well established genre. Because of all this, it fits right in with the rest and is well worth your time.
Overall it’s impressive how many experiences they have packed inside Call of Duty: Black Ops – Cold War. You get a full-fledged, amazing singleplayer campaign, a more than decent multiplayer, endless zombie fights, and a silly twin-stick shooter bundled together. Not all of them are perfect, but somehow it all still holds up pretty good.
I’m happy to say that Insomniac has impressed me in their ability to pull off such an entertaining title to kick off the next generation of gaming. Even if it isn’t that long, the fantastic gameplay and stunning visuals make this title shine. Maybe it’s just my love for Spider-Man, but Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales has pushed the standard even higher. I can’t wait to see what’s next for this Miles and this Spider-Man universe.
For people looking for a “lite” version of a Souls game, this could be a good way of dipping your toe in the water. For veterans of the genre, Chronos: Before The Ashes is simply too basic and easy to actively seek out.
Ultimately, Bugsnax is one charming adventure. Underneath the wacky exterior of outlandish critters lies a surprisingly heartfelt story. Even with its shortcomings and glitches, the game rises above thanks to its charm. This is a case of style over substance that manages to exceed expectations.
Despite the few issues, I enjoyed my time with Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin. The in-depth farming system was relaxing and almost therapeutic, which really goes in its favor.
