- Ikai

It’s not very often I get sent physical copies of stuff, so you can imagine my joy when I was offered a physical copy of Ikai to review. Having not known anything about it, knowing nothing of its form or function, I was happy to give it a bash. Unfortunately, this is where most of my joy ended.

Mario Strikers: Battle League Football is the latest Mario sports title on the Nintendo Switch. Though I have never played any of the Mario Strikers games before, since many people think highly of the series, I was eager to get my hands on it. I was especially excited to see how the title would run on the Switch, as I enjoyed the fast-paced action and gritty art style used in the trailers. Was my first experience with the series a good one? Find out in this Rapid Review.

I had my eye on Trek to Yomi as soon as I saw it was coming to Xbox Game Pass. The trailer completely sold it to me, a black and white voyage fighting as a samurai in what appears to be feudal Japan. This was an adventure in which I felt compelled to partake. Read my Rapid Review below to find out if it lived up to expectations.

Pile up! Box by Box is a three-dimensional puzzle platformer. Though this game does feature many interesting puzzles, instead of emphasizing difficult and intricate puzzles, it focuses on creating a lovely and charming atmosphere to explore. Does this decision make the game stand out for the better? Or did it work to the game’s detriment? Find out in this Rapid Review.

When it comes to animal mascot games from the late 90s, and early 00s, the ones that immediately come to mind are Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, and Jak & Daxter.

The Serpent Rogue is an occult action-platformer that takes in a world where chaos and corruption are taking over. To put an end to this torment, I needed to craft potions, refine my arsenal of items, and engage in combat with a variety of enemies. Was this journey one to write home about? Or did I wish I got back sooner? Find out in this Rapid Review.

From the moment I started Mini Motorways on the Nintendo Switch, I had a nagging thought of familiarity in the back of my mind. A scratching déjà vu sensation like I had been here before. When I did some research, I quelled that feeling and realised I had played the developer Dinosaur Polo Club’s previous outing Mini Metro on my phone. They both feel similar and the mechanics are very much aligned. Phew, I am not going mad!

Rhythm games are plentiful on the Quest 2, from wildly recognized hits like Beat Saber, Pistol Whip, Audica, and Synth Riders. There’s also a generally unknown corner of indie rhythm games that deserve the spotlight like Unplugged, Ragnarok, Smash Drums, and Thumper. AVICII Invector: Encore Edition borrows a lot from Thumper and turns the hit music from AVICII into a motion and timed-button press virtual reality game.

Virtual Reality games need to do a few things for me to captivate my attention. There needs to be immersion in the world, which usually combines visuals and sound into the story, as well as being able to interact with the world around me. The other thing that VR games need to do to hold my attention is to give me that ‘one more thing’ to keep coming back to, albeit a gameplay loop, enthralling environment, or an engrossing story. Wanderer, which launched in January 2022 on PSVR, Steam VR, and as a native Oculus game (which is where I played the game using Steam VR and my Meta Quest 2) checks all of those boxes for me.

The release of the Nintendo Wii bundled with Wii Sports is of cultural significance to not just gamers but households worldwide. I remember my first experience round a family friend’s for New Year’s Eve, where every one of us joined in, taking it in turns to play. My little mind was blown at the motion controls, which were so innovative at the time.

Pirates are a pretty versatile group. Whether it’s on the high seas, in space, or on a distant planet. If a pirate’s involved then you know what kind of adventure you’re in for. On its surface Black Skylands ticks many pirate boxes. You’ll be the captain of your own ship, travel to interesting places, go on grand adventures, tackle someone wanting to destroy your way of life, and even find treasure. However, rather than taking place on land, this adventure sees you heading to the skies – and your boat…it’s an airship!

Yes, we have reviewed Trigger Witch already on the Switch, haha that rhymes! So this review will be a short and sweet number as I try to detail the differences between the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch versions. Yes, the PS5 is more powerful but for a game like Trigger Witch, which is a pixelated top-down game that will run well on most consoles, I suspected most differences to be minor. Strap yourself in and lets Trigger Witch!
