Final Fantasy VII might not seem as ambitious as it once did, but it is still an incredible ride for fans of the traditional JRPG.
If you would have told me a few weeks ago that I’d now be invested in helping a pack of squids of varying shapes and sizes thwart an oozy corruption hellbent on destroying their homeland, I would have thought that you were crazy. Heck, I still think I’m crazy for what I’m about to say about this game.
The Banner Saga offers an expertly crafted narrative buffered by fun combat and addictively painful player decisions that could not be more worth your time.
In Banner Saga 2, the creators manage to keep all the aspects that made me fall in love with the first game while tweaking enough elements to make this title feel even more polished, challenging, and beautiful.
Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom fully succeeds in its mission to capture the spirit of Wonder Boy 3 and successfully carry the franchise into the modern era. Every strength the original games had, the developers of Monster Boy went out of their way to expand upon or enhance. They have crafted a game world that is vibrant, lively, and full of riches to be discovered.
Dragon's Dogma is a rare and special title that, even when removed from its initial launch, continues to enthrall, surprise, and delight.
All in all, Saturday Morning RPG provides a memorable jaunt down RPG paths with solid role-playing mechanics that are as effective as they are zany.
The world is charming, full of secrets, great storylines, and the gameplay systems all work very well together. The end result is a fantastic farm-life-sim that is incredibly hard to put down.
Dragonball Xenoverse 2 is available on other consoles, and I have played them, but the Switch is the best place for the game to call home. The handheld options take the game to a new level, online battles work just fine with Nintendo Switch Online, and local multiplayer is a blast even with joycons. Dragonball Xenoverse 2 for the Nintendo Switch is easily one of the best Dragonball games ever made, and it surpasses The Legacy of Goku as the best localized Dragonball RPG ever. Although the game has been out for a while now, it’s still going strong. It is a great time to pick it up due to its $40USD price point, and brand-new DLC that adds Broly and Super Saiyan Blue Gogeta are just on the horizon. Simply put, this game is a MUST PLAY for Dragonball fans.
The Dragon Quest / Minecraft hodgepodge is something you’d probably never dream of asking for, or even expect to work. But I am so glad that it is a thing.
Fans of 16-bit era JRPGs itching for their next meaningful experience need look no further than Shadows of Adam.
Through its fun, witty writing and its grounded, sometimes challenging gameplay, Blossom Tales offers an adventure you honestly don’t want to miss out on.
Cosmic Star Heroine is a charming retro-inspired game that sets itself apart with its deep battle system. Don’t go into this game expecting a unique storyline, but instead know that it was made with a lot of love and care by people who are obviously fans of SNES-era RPG’s. Cosmic Star Heroine does a ton of things right and provides many hours of entertainment at a budget price.
Disgaea 5 Complete is the type of game that can easily provide hundreds, if not thousands, of hours of playtime, so there’s no reason to rush it. There is a near infinite amount of freedom in customization and gameplay tweaks that should satisfy RPG fans of any caliber. While I still prefer the thematical grittiness that Final Fantasy Tactics offers, there is simply no comparison to Disgaea 5 from a mechanics perspective. Seriously, if you find yourself enjoying the first few hours of the game, don’t be surprised when those single digit playtimes roll into double and triple digits before you know it.
Dragon Sinker, by any metric, is one of KEMCO's finest outings. While a few of the usual KEMCO quirks still exist – awkward menus with randomly ordered items, lottery items that can imbalance the early game, and a screen size that looks a little too zoomed in – they are hardly game breaking. The gameplay, visual, and sound design all skillfully weave classic and modern components into one of the most satisfying budget RPGs currently available on the Switch.
In my opinion, Ys VIII falls just short of being a masterpiece, but is still an amazing game despite its shortcomings. I found the island of Seiren to be an absolute blast to explore, as it is chocked full of action, adventures, wonders to explore and mysteries to uncover. Ys VIII is my favorite Switch RPG to date, and has made me a fan of the series to boot. While it may not have the same performance quality as its PS4 counterpart, it is still an excellent version all around. Be right back while I install Ys Seven on Steam.
Some of the earlier Final Fantasy games simply transcend time and need to be made available for the newer generations, and this is one that I hope to see them experience
This mixture of tabletop game mechanics deals a winning hand as one of the most unique and rewarding Role-Playing Games on the Nintendo Switch.
SteamWorld Heist is a game that has left me with no regrets – okay, maybe the fact that I'm kicking myself for not giving it the time of day beforehand counts as one. Outside of that, I really love everything about this game – the sound, look, and feel are just stellar for a modestly priced indie affair. Like steampunk? Play this game. Tactical/Strategy enthusiast? Play it. In it just for the unicorn hat? Whatever the case may be, play this freaking game.
Tangledeep is a game that drips not only with 16-bit nostalgia, but also a myriad of complex and interwoven game elements that offer hours and hours of replayability. All that would be moot, of course, if the core combat and exploration mechanics weren't so enjoyable. Thankfully, Impact Gameworks has created just the right balance of story, difficulty, strategy, consequence, and progression to keep players coming back, even after sinking multiple hours into each character. Tangledeep is without a doubt one of, if not THE best roguelikes to currently grace the Nintendo Switch.
