I found its stronger aspects to be memorable and well-presented. I can appreciate the personal nature of this game, as the creators obviously poured themselves into it, but this is definitely a title that has a very specific appeal.
I briefly felt prepared to give a bad rating to the game after experiencing so much frustration, but that would not be fair to this game in the least. It would be ignoring the joy and discovery inherent to many actions in the game.
This game is worth it for the sniping alone. It really does feel amazing to get those long range kills and have the whole game go slow motion as you follow the bullet through the target (similar to the more recent Mortal Kombat games).
If you are invested in the story and characters from the onset, then it is worth it to see Thief of Thieves’ to the end. The game weaves a great tale and the strong cast of characters keep the investment going.
All in all, this is a title that was most likely meant for VR only but made a standard version to appeal to a wider audience. While it’s fun, it just doesn’t adapt well outside of VR.
It’s clear that Highwire put a lot into this game and wanted to make something special. The world is spectacular and I genuinely love the story this game tells. The game sounds amazing and I want nothing more that to just be able to explore this world in a more comfortable setting. Sadly all of that gets thrown out the window when you try to play.
If you’re going to play this game, I’d recommend simply trying the free mobile version out and making your decision based on that. It’s much better suited for that platform, anyhow. But I cannot personally recommend it on Switch, especially at its current price. With a bland and predictable story, poor presentation, and gameplay that just feels like nothing.
